Trans-Black finish on Quilt

So, I'm in the middle of working out the details on the WorkshopLive custom guitar and need to ask for some more guidance from you guys...

Here's what I think I'm going with so far:

Newport with Maple back, sides and top

Ebony fretboard (Blank)

Ebony headstock overlay

Pearl Logo

Seth Lovers (Tapped)

Based on the recent threads here and conversations with Frank at Hamer, I think the Newport suits my style and direction better than the Monaco or Artist. I'm looking for a pickup that's going to give me the most versatility tone-wise (Doesn't break up too easy -- Can go from rock to blues to jazz), so it was suggested to go the Seth Lover route. It was Frank's idea to tap the coils for even more tonal variety -- Very cool! Decided on a Maple top rather than the standard Spruce to make a brighter tone available if I need it, but balanced with the warmer pickups.

Tonewise, I think we've got it nailed. Now, it's time for the "Bling" factor.

Frankly, I like inlay work as much as the next guy. But on this one, I'm thinking "Less is More" is the route to take. Let the wood do the talking, and leave the pearl to the oysters. I'm having a hard time, however, deciding what direction to go on finish color. Burst or paint? What colors? Then I thought about the idea of going the "Black Beauty" route -- With a transparent black finish on an ultimate quilt or flame top. Kind of a "Lucille on Steroids". I'm thinking that, with the Ivoroid binding and gold hardware, this would be a absolute tone monster with an understated elegance about it.

Question -- Have any of you ordered a flame or quilt top with a transparent black finish? Do you happen to have pics?

Question 2 -- Anybody here built a Newport with similar specs? Any comments on tone, etc...?

Thanks for all the help!

On a guitar of that quality/caliber, definitely go for the 5-ply binding (heck, even 3 ply) if you can do it. Trust me, that little touch goes a LONG way and is not gaudy in the least.

That sounds like a great idea, and I'm sure it'll be a stunner both as a player and looks-wise.

Oh - I forgot.

Make it a doubleneck.

As Pretty as thoose photos are keep in mine Trans black can sometimes turn out trans grayish blue. but a +1 on the three ply or five or six ply binding very cool and make sure you get it double bound back and front since you are going with a maple top and back.

Mike is right on about the back binding. It makes a HUGE difference!

The trans black below looks like freakin' VELVET!!! Beautiful, Buzzy!!!

Greg/Silentman -- That transblack quilt is STUNNING!!! Absolutely jaw-dropping gorgeous!!! To add to it, the ebony fretboard with the single Victory @ at the 12th was what I was thinking of doing (That or a signature inlay at the 22nd). Wow, that is simply amazing...

Question -- Was "Flo" a Mahogany back/sides or Maple? I'm leaning toward Maple to give it more of an ES335 vibe. Any reasons not to?

BTW, Greg -- Would you happen to have a wider shot of the Standard with Gold hardware? I'm leaning toward the gold as a way to balance the strong contrast of the transblack finish on the figured Maple, but not sure... (Jeeziz, that sounded like a comment from one of those HGTV shows my wife watches!!! )

Hey! My ears were ringing.

Flo is a mahogany backed/sided beauty with that crazy quilted maple cap. On a Newport, the maple top is already pretty mid-heavy. (the newports seem optimized for spruce caps) but with the 12er it sings just right.
