Victor (Fret Friend) Posted April 26, 2013 Posted April 26, 2013 We now have two - the original one plus the new rackmount. They've also just upgraded the firmware which gives polyphonic pitch-shifting (drop-tuning), plus true temparament tuning - so anything you play with slightly out-of-tune strings plays bang in tune - now that's clever. We're using it to track all the guitar parts on the next album - and it's become Andy's go-to device for almost everything he does. He's spent the last few weeks profiling literally dozens of head/cab/ combinations and now has a massive library of tones which can be heard on the last/latest albums from Accept, Testament, Killswitch, Carcass and a bunch of others. It's also become his live rig - he's running it straight into the PA and getting his monitor feed on in-ears, with the walls of backline just there for show. I'm still reluctant to go that far though, and I'm sticking to my trad setup for the time being. Although the tones he's profiled are his own and not for public consumption, I know he'll make exceptions for me and my HFC friends, so as/when you guys do go down this route, PM or email me and I'll see what I can do. FLICK! I know this guy! We (Concrete Sox) rehearsed with Sabbat (when they were called Hydra) in a church in Nottingham. Of course, I know Giz Butt personally too. Should be gigging with his bands soon...
kevinbower1959 Posted April 26, 2013 Posted April 26, 2013 Andy's the other guitarist in my band HELL, Vic - as well as my best friend. And Gizz is also great friend of mine - in fact he's been out touring with us as guitar and backline tech at a bunch of shows. Super guy. I got to know him in 2006 when Sabbat reformed for a UK tour - he was playing bass for them on that. I was doing all the keyboard parts for 'Dreamweaver'. I also produced the first-ever Sabbat single - 'Blood For The Blood God' (the 'White Dwarf' flexidisc) which we recorded out at Yew Tree Farm in Newark, and that's how I first got to know Andy. That tour included my first appearance at Download - which we played again with HELL in 2011. Small world, eh?
Victor (Fret Friend) Posted April 26, 2013 Posted April 26, 2013 Cool! I Gizz's TMiS were gonna support us at our reunion but we pulled our UK sh*t due to line up shenanigans/commitment. Good to know info & good to meet yer I just been googling Hydra/Sabbat and saw references to Hell. Good to see Andy doing what he does = he's fkn good...
LordsoftheJungle Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 I'm sooo close to buying one of these Kempers, it would fit perfectly in my SKB rack/pedal board... just this and a speaker cab- talk about a tiny footprint! I should follow up this post with a possible correction,,, the KPA is supposed to be 8.66" deep and these SKB PS100 rack/pedalboards have a stop-plate(lip) exactly 8" back, you can see it in the picture. I'm thinking I can remove the lip, but it's possible that the resulting limited space for cables will make the setup problematic.
LordsoftheJungle Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 another note: the rack mount does not have dedicated mod rate and intensity knobs like the lunchbox version.
zorrow Posted April 29, 2013 Author Posted April 29, 2013 another note: the rack mount does not have dedicated mod rate and intensity knobs like the lunchbox version.I have no rack and don't plan to have one, so I'll go with the lunchbox anyway. Not what I'd call a great-looking device, but I'll get used to it. In this specific case, usefulness matters much more than beauty to me.

Armitage Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Even ignoring that the lunch box is really ugly, you still need an amp... and rack amps are pretty common.
LordsoftheJungle Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 The deal is done, Kemper en route as we speak,,,, thanks for the nudge zorrow! A rack unit would have fit nicely in my studio rack but I went with the retro lunchbox because of the stereo outs and dedicated mod knobs. I'll just pick up a tech21 Power Engine for when I go out,,,

I'm jazzed about the idea of being able to play reasonable facsimiles of every amp from Aiken to DrZ without spending a million dollars.
LordsoftheJungle Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 Just in case anybody else is following this thread, I gotta say this Kemper is really blowing me away. I've spent the last hour marveling at a Victoria 20112 profile, incredible. I will say that I've given it every advantage by running it in stereo through a Peavey 60/60 (6L6 tubes) into two separate 1x12s with relatively flat response speakers (EVM12L and WGS Blackhawk). The Tech21 Power Engine arrives this week, hopefully this will match up well with it.I haven't tried running my own effects through it yet, kinda curious about how they will interact. The on-board effects are nothing fancy but they are pretty comprehensive and I've got no complaints yet!
burningyen Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 The onboard FX are somewhat generic, but very tweakable and very high quality from a sonic fidelity standpoint. Glad to hear you're enjoying yours. I've been creating new rigs based on the recently released profiles of David Gilmour's actual DR103 used on The Wall and DSOTM. It's blowing my mind.
LordsoftheJungle Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Hey Ben, are the DR103 profiles currently at the Amp Factory the new ones you're talking about?thx!
burningyen Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 They're called "Gilmour Hiwatt 100 1970 – 10 Profiles" on the homepage. Andy at the Amp Factory shot these pics of the actual amp:
LordsoftheJungle Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Thanks,,, I will download them tonight. Not sure if I'm ready to spring for the Pete Cornish effects though!
burningyen Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Slapped this together in Garageband last night using the Gilmour profiles. I could do better, but time is short and sleep is precious: Mercury Head Kemper TAF demo

kevinbower1959 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 We just upgraded our Kempers to the 'Stage' versions which have a built-in 400-watt power amp. It sounds a lot, but it's a digital class D device which gives about the same usable volume as a tube 50-watter. The sheer joy of flying anywhere in Europe with all your tones in an airline-friendly lunchbox is a sheer joy, and has brought undreamed-of levels of consistency to our performances. The new firmware upgrade also contains a profile called 'Melodic Wah' which totally nails the Schenker/Amott half-cocked wah lead tone. Gorgeous
tomteriffic Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I recently heard our own Paults using a lunchbox with his 4-digit and TC Electronics G System through a Bose stick-type PA. He was playing loud and live with his 80's band, the Reaganomics. I have to say I was pretty impressed. He didn't have his Marshall Jubilees to A/B against, but he had modeled them and it was awfully good. I don't know about dead on, but very good.
burningyen Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Another clip using the Gilmour profiles:Young Lust
proxmax Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 bought the rack version, will arrive tomorrow.
