Hameritis

Hi erveryone,

hope all you 'turkey-heads' had a nice and blessed thanksgiving (while on the other side of the big pond everybody was workin their asses off...)!

The term 'Hameritis' came across a couple of times and I don't really know what it refers to. From what I understand it must be some kind of finish-flaw. But what exactly is it?

It's when the clear coat separates and lifts slightly, gives kind of a milky appearance. Doesn't affect playability, sound or structural integrity of the guitar - it just looks funny.

Here's a pic of the neck joint on my Artist Custom. I actually love Hameritis - it's the reason I got this fantasic guitar for only $650.

Wasn't there a way to get rid of it by using superglue in a hypodermic needle? I think BCR Greg mentioned it once.

That method will work to keep the issue from spreading but isn't a cure-all. It won't necessarily get rid of the problem.

You usually see it at the neck joint and along the edges of unbound rosewood fingerboards. CA glue will fix it in spots where it has occurred but won't prevent it from happening elsewhere.

I've owned two Hamers where the finish on almost the entire back of the guitar was lifting off.

You only see it from 1992 to the present. The older finish did not have this problem.

The "Bad" years seem to be from late '92 until early '98 or so. After that, the incidents of that I've seen are extremely rare.

I'd just have to say you're not looking hard enough...or I'm looking too hard. I see less of it recently because there are fewer Hamers made recently, I don't see much change in the percentages.

Maybe it's the latter?

I see a TON of new Hamers every year and have very rarely seen this crop up since it was more problematic on the mid-late '90s era models. I've also seen way more of those without issues than with that problem. I can think of less than 4-5 with that issue that I have seen in the last 6-7 years.

I think that's it, right there. How many of the '90s guitars had it when they were brand new? Not too many or they wouldn't have sold.

I think a lot has to do with a change in the clearcoat formula. I saw new Hamers hanging in the mid/late '90s with that affliction, and they sold. I honestly believe that it is not now, nor will it be in 5-7 years, the issue that it was. Just my opinion...

Well,

I guess I got a REAL late 92' guitar. Have this grayish-brown stuff on the sides of my (non-binding) fingerboard right where the neck joins the body. Until know I though the fretjob broke out some of the rosewood and they did some kind of filler in there.

Now I know!

Do I have to do some kind of super-glue thing on it? Will it spread (like a REAL disease ???)

On the Hamer Guru tour in Atlanta Frank Rindone actually asked if anyone was catching Hameritis. I should have told him what it meant.

Hameritis is a factory problem. I don't know why you guys live with it. Everyone should get their Hameritis affected guitars refinished by Hamer. Come on, it wasn't like a bad week or something.

Yeah I have always wondered that too. I know a guy who recevieved a custom order with hameritis from the factory at the hell joint. I believe they repaired it for him by injecting colored glue or something. I could be wrong this is a second hand recollection from like 2000 or thereabouts.

I had the board edges buffed out on two guitars under warranty but I was flatly told 'no' to refins/repairs for 'pizza day' issues. I *was* offered an excellent deal on a refin, but it wasn't gonna be free.

My 03 studio custom had some issues along the binding and around the neck joint. Hamer repaired it under warrantee. They did not do a total refinish, but the problem was corrected and they did reshoot a clear coat over the entire guitar. They replaced my worn tailpiece screws as well. They also rewired my pickups back to stock as I had reversed the volumes. That was the only thing that 'annoyed' me, LOL.

I bought a new 95 Studio Wraparound in 97 and it had it on both sides of the neck and at the heel. I had to send the guitar to Hamer for an unrelated warranty repair and those guys fixed it without even being asked. I just received and email saying the return would take a week longer as they wanted to refinish the neck to address those issues. I thought that was real class!
