Since you brought up Dean Guitars
zorrow replied to hikarateboy's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Can you give me the low down on these? How do they differ from the other imports and where do they fall quality wise from the usa stuff? Are they still sold new? Having a hard time understanding that. As murkat said, they are almost up there with their American counterparts, and are even better than many. They were built in the early 90's. If I remember well, this was while Dean was moving to Tampa. They did so in order to keep a higher-end offer active. This lasted just a couple of years, or even less. Gene would be more precise than me on this subject. The fact is, build quality-wise, those guitars are just awesome. The electronic components are so-so though, but that's easily fixable. As of the rings, I've been using MIK pup rings on them without any problem. A couple of details now: their necks are C-shaped (forget about the famous Dean V profile), they usually have no binding and they have dot inlays on the first fret. You should be able to find one below 600, although they're becoming more rare these days. -
Since you brought up Dean Guitars

All the Deans I have owned, but one, came from the Dean forum. Some good deals can be made there, now and then. However, at the HFC we seem to have a higher average income that theirs. That's why you see less vintage stuff FS there than here, I suppose. But Deans are great, as well as the players in that forum. And while I also dislike the Dime/Razor stuff and have mixed feelings about the V-necks (sometimes they're just too thin for my tastes), the MSG Vees and the Czech models do satisfy my needs big time. You know, I even plan to make them build me a goldtop V with P-90's someday, as well as a 7-string korina V. -
I've been well into Devin Townsend lately. Have three albums of him in the car, spinning in turns: "Epicloud", "Deconstruction" and "Ziltoid The Omniscient" At job I listen to different stuff every day. Last week I listened to -M- and Paul Personne, two singers/players from France. Also played some Bob Marley, Bonney M, Santana and Jim Murple Memorial. Ah! Last Megadeth album got some playing time, but it got me bored quickly. Looking forward to the new Queensryche now -Toddryche, as Dave says.

Got some timeouts and SQL errors a copule of days ago. -
Those are Wilkinson locking roller bridges. I had one on an Explorer I once had. They are "locking" bridges, like the Tonepros, so the sustain is supposed to improve. Ronny Scheithauer prefers using those instead of replicating the original RS bridge. Some info here: http://www.guitarfetish.com/Wilkinson-Brass-Roller-Bridge-Locking-Studs-Chrome_p_866.html

Yeah man, that looks really great. Now you need to make a hard print of that picture and sign it, dedicated to me with something like: "Ionel, You owe me this V, there's no way you can thank me for helping you to reach Ronny and in addition you bug me now by asking me to ship it to you. Treat it well then, or else I'll kick your ass when you'll come to Germany next year. Best regards, Dirk" Only upon confirmation of the existence of such a printed picture, I'll give you my address.

^Now THAT is COOL! What a look!

It's not that short to me, but it's a great one anyway.

You did notice that, didn't you? He bends those notes from below, and then on the third bend he comes right after the strong beat. Masterful! And the legato lines are great too -the man does have chops as well, no BS. He never ceases to amaze me! In fact, many of his solos are quite short and still the most of them are classics. Some few more examples, for your enjoyment: I Want It All (from 0:21 to 0:31): Dead On Two Legs (from 0:54 to 1:05): Friends Will Be Friends (from 0:00 to 0:12):

I don't see why you'd exclude yourself. I've seen you playing and singing. You are good. It would be very boring if we were all a bunch of shredders, you know?

I was listening to Queen this morning and for some reason stuck to the second guitar solo in "Save Me". Here it is: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8033493/save_me_solo2.mp3 It's very short (no more than 8 or 9 seconds) but it's still expressive and flashy, and it also fits to the song perfectly. Brian May is such a master of phrasing and dynamics! Managing to be so concise and so musical at the same time can't be but the work of a true genius. Now, do you have other "short and sweet" guitar solos like this one?
-
As of letting Dr. May to know about it, the following pictures lead me to think he might actually like my guitar quite a bit: What is funny is that my RS-V idea dates from at least 1990, and I didn't know May had used a V as a backup but until a couple of years ago. Also, not so long ago I noticed he was playing a V on the Princess of the Universe video -I think it was Ana who made me notice so, actually: I asked about it here and was told it was a Washburn-something he grabbed around to avoid using his RS on the clip. So, I guess my Mayday-V will make now much more sense to everyone... even to the man himself!

Knowing our friend Diablo here, I think Dibs won't answer this time.

WOW! Total shredding BEAUTY. Congrats, man!

Thank you. Now it's built already, it looks easy; but it took me several iterations on paper to steer this project to where I wanted it to go. I wanted it to remain as loyal as possible to the original RS, with a vintage edge and lot of class, but I also wanted a Vee. As I don't like cheesy metal shapes nor "over-pointy" stuff, I opted for the classic 58 V. I think I completely got it when I decided to go with rounder pickguard corners and with the tremolo plate exactly like in the RS. I'm very proud of this guitar and have no words to thank the builder, Ronny, who is a caring, skilled, knowledgeable and open-minded person, and who also had to deal with my caprices at every single level -and also contributed with his more than valuable input and experience, of course. So, as he has materialized my vision 100% to my expectations, I will never be able to pay him for that, in spite of what I paid him for his job. If this thing plays as good as it looks, I'll consider my guitar-related dreams realized. I thought the same at first, but now I think it's hard to tell how big is that market. At least it's a quite risky move going that path, for sure... but who knows anyway?

TA-DA!!!! My custom order is done. This is a dream come true, something I had always had in mind and never had the chance to get it built -had previously contacted RS Guitars and they wouldn't do it. But thanks to gorch here, I finally found the right builder to make me this, exactly to my specs -chunky neck and 24.75" scale included. Please, meet my Scheithauer Mayday-V: Now it's done, ready to get shipped to me. But I guess she will spend some few weeks at gorch's in Germany first -still have to arrange this with him, as he seems now not very sure about it. In any case, I can't wait to have it in my hands!
