Thanks but too late now. Thereโs also the issue of not being a fan of the kidney bean shaped tuners ๐ซค

I think when you see the finished paint scheme, any similarities to the Evel Knievel Charvel will dissipate quickly. Nothing against Evel Knievel. Just not what Iโm going for. ๐

Itโd be great if I could get a put ahold of a set of red and blue tuners. The closest I could come to that would be buying a set of red and a set of blue tuners and then mixing and matching. Not really interested in investing that kind of $$.

Bought a limited edition Floyd w/ stars and stripes finish because, well, because it was there. Oh, and it was 15 % off. But needed a guitar to put it on that would be thematically aligned. So, after much contemplation and searching, came across this BTS Charvel Desolation Star that seemed perfect for the project. I have assembled all the necessary, crucial components and am getting ready to send it out for an initial fitting and then an appropriate themed paint job. The neck is a Locke Custom Guitars custom order (I DO NOT recommend these guys) The pickup is a very cool, custom-wound Gravelin 5150 era replica. A mandatory kill switch volume pot. And some Gotoh Tuners. More bits and bobs are on their way but this is essentially what it will be:

I don't feel quite so bad now.

I debated titling this: Rock n Roll Never Dies But Some Bands Need To. A bit too morbid. Besides, this is intended to be an upbeat post. My cover band, Bad Karma, has only played one actual paying gig in 4 years, when we first started out. Personnel changes and a couple of major health issues have stymied us. We've managed to get out there regardless, playing open mic nights and then returning for "feature sets" where we get to play for 45-50 minutes during said Open Mic events. Yeah, playing for free- woo hoo! We've played at last night's venue out in Blue Bell PA a few times and have managed to endear ourselves to the locals and the house band leader. To be fair, we've killed it comparative to the other acts, aside from the house band. We played again last night and despite myriad technical issues (including a very senior moment when I missed playing during an entire song because I thought my rig had shit the bed. Turns out my toggle switch on the Lester was a little wonky on conductivity and well, you know... ) we delivered the goods. So much so that the house band leader, after giving us major props, asked if we wanted to do a full paid show. Ah, the sweet sound of validation. I was resigned to thinking that I was going to ride into the rock n roll sunset on a horse (in this iteration) that had never played a legit 3 set, payed gig. It bears mentioning that despite our age, we were NOT the oldest one's performing that night, not by far. Kudos to those codgers for still getting out there and playing. No Hamer content but I did bust out my Jackson Custom Shop FWAM. It garnered more than few comments and looks of admiration(?)

To be fair, I have more straps than guitars now, as well. But if you think selling guitars is difficult in this economy... ...I don't know of a thriving pre-owned guitar strap market.
-
If you're like me, it's because you have that many guitars and can't be bothered to swap straps between guitars.
-
Never really gave much consideration to guitar straps (other than they must have appropriate designs) until the double neck Cali arrived. Not long after, as my back got a bit more <ahem> sensitive to some heavier guitars, I started thinking about ways to make it more bearable rather than unload otherwise perfectly good guitars. Right around the time I was noticing the weight of the Attila Iceman, I came across this Fender neoprene padded strap. There was a sale, I bought one. I highly recommend it. The guitar is still heavy but I can shoulder it for a great deal longer with this strap. Also comes in 3 " wide version. ETA- my ONLY criticism is- it doesn't seem to have as much room for adjustment so, if you like your guitar slung high up on your rib cage, you might want to double check before buying. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/0990694206--fender-swell-neoprene-guitar-strap-2-inch

I've been following her for a few years now. She's been doing a stint with Cirque du Soleil (in Vegas, I think) Her brother Ethan is no slouch either!!!

Came across this interview on Song Cake where he essentially shares the same stories and insights. -

Great interview!! I have had him on my radar since I caught a reel on FB promoting one of his songs but I only recently downloaded their latest "The End" Wow! Guy's got it all. Multi-instrumentalist and damned talented. Great song writer with a very solid voice (though IMO I'd like it if he had a bit more grit/gravel in it. A lil' too sweet for some of the hard hitting tunes they do.) Is it just me or did anyone else hear a bit of Foo Fighters vibe in Mammoth's music? -

Funny story about Kiss air guitar- in middle school, I was in full-on Kiss fan boy mode. This, despite the fact that I didn't own a single Kiss LP. Couldn't afford one and my folks absolutely would not contribute a penny towards that satanic group. Nor would they drive me to a record store to purchase one if I did save up birthday $$$ None the less, my fanaticism was undeterred and I borrowed my neighbor's Kiss Alive. Played the shit out of that 2 record set. A year or so later, met a kid up the road who had 4 or 5 of their albums. I eventually persuaded him to sell me his well worn copies of Destroyer and Rock N Roll Over. By the time I hit 8th grade, I was fanatical. The middle school had this fledgling social experiment where they corralled all of the 8th graders in the gym and for 50 minutes, you could interact with your fellow classmates, shoot hoops, play records, dance etc. I guess idea was to promote social skills, I dunno. Anyway, me and my two fellow Kiss fanatics took that opportunity to climb to the top of the bleachers and air band to Kiss that we had managed to get on the record player which was connected to the gym's sound system. There we were, oblivious to the laughs of derision and scorn of rolled eyes, rocking out as if we were at Madison Square Garden. It was glorious! Sure, it damn near made me a social pariah but the classmates who took the time to get to know me just chalked it up to me being "Kiss crazy" I seem to recall I had a lot of classmates sign my 8th grade yearbook to that effect. -

I can't help but agree- if you were not exposed to the spectacle and bombast of Kiss in the mid- late 70's, you likely wouldn't get them. Their zenith, IMO, was Destroyer and their swan song was 1977's Love Gun. From that point on, everything seemed to be an effort to preserve or rekindle their former glory. Well-packaged and commercial. I saw them in the late 80's sans makeup, with Eric Carr and Bruce Kulick. They were trying to ride the hair metal wave (which was on it's way out, ironically) and while they put on a good show, it just wasn't the same as 70's era Kiss. Kulick is a very solid guitarist and brought a modicum of 80's guitar dynamic to the band but Ace was the Spaceman (showmanship) and a talented contributor to the song writing. Besides, a smoking, 3 pickup Lester seems far easier to obtain than ungodly shred technique. -
Exactly. It's Ace and it was '77 era shredding. 2+ years later, this cat named Eddie Van Halen would make both of those things insignificant. I loved Kiss back in the day. Still listen to them from time to time. I did. On my Harley.
-
I don't know if I agree with the widely held assertion that this was Ace's greatest solo or one of the GOAT.
-
+1 Ace was my ambassador into the lifelong preoccupation with rock guitar and staggering debt accrued on guitars. My first? A Hondo II Les Paul copy; to be like Ace.
