The BBE is really intended to correct fidelity problems, and in some cases (usually full-bandwidth applications like a PA mix) can add clarity or punch. Used as intended, it's a pretty subtle thing, and if you get an "effect" out of it, it'll probably be a bad one. Compression is a good thing. In front it provides boost, among other things. I've also used multiband in effects loops to add sag to solid state amps and color the tone a little - put some shimmer on top etc.

In the same line as MCC's recommendation: I'm totally hooked on rotary cab sims. I don't own a pedal version, but the market seems to be growing. Line 6 and Boss have both released dedicated rotary pedals in recent months. I'm pretty curious about both of them.

SOLE SURVIVORS OR TIME WARP BANDITS
darc replied to Willie G. Moseley's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Black Sabbath went a few years with only Tony Iommi accounted for. And many more with just Tony and Geezer. (This reminds me of the Separated at Birth thread from a couple of weeks ago. I mentioned a bunch of guitar-god types that tend to look interchangeable to me: Iommi, Santana, etc. but I left out the best fit, George Harrison. Some pictures of Harrison look exactly like photos of a young Iommi.) -
Are those prices "per each" or in bulk? I figured for sure Costco would have a Theme Les Paul Variety Pack.

The Most Gratifying Time I've spent in a long time

Really good stuff. -
"I have nothing to add to the above..." Recently replaced by the more fashionable "+1".

Maybe it's been mentioned already, but there's been a rash of this on the OC lately: "What is the Hamer of [insert some absurdly miscellaneous item here]?"

This is supposed to help hurricane victims?

They should have had a picture of a guy looting the Katrina guitar out of a NO music shop, and on the guitar, a picture of a guy looting the Katrina guitar out of a NO music shop, and on that guitar, a picture of a guy looting the Katrina guitar out of a NO music shop, and... It would be just like one of our disappearing vortex of quotes threads. Go on, you know you want to quote me... Gibson can't possibly expect to sell those in quantity. That guitar is a press release, nothing more. -
I made the first list! How Inner Circle is that? I'll add: "I find myself coming here less often..." and "This is my last post..."

Very rarely. To be honest, I don't know how you guys - excepting the professional techs - ever found the time to become so well informed about pickups and tone. I can barely find time to keep my playing in shape, and half the time I'm playing on dead strings because I have to choose between practicing and restringing. The thing that's always confounded me in learning about pickups is that there are so many variables involved in a guitars tone. No two guitars sound alike, even with identical electronics, so unless I set a month aside to solder a bunch of pickups into the same guitar and listen *very* critically, I'll never really know what I like. Anyway, I'm probably better off being ignorant. One more expensive hobby I don't need...

Technique part 2 (Blatant chops video)
darc replied to MrGuitarguy's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Holy god that guy is amazing. Someone posted a video of him a couple months back where he was playing two necks at once, and doing silly things like curling the guitar while he played etc... and I wasn't very impressed. But this is very musical in addition to being technically impressive. The effortless sweep-picking is my favorite bit. Bill, you might be able to play one note faster than anyone else (did you already play it?) but one thing's for sure - nobody swaps a guitar out as fast as Micheal Angelo and his invisible guitar tech. I'm guessing the video was shot after the fact as a "lip-sync" for demonstrative purposes. -
Just curious - what's the acoustic in the second pic, and what was its relevance to the discussion?
-
I've wondered the same thing. (Especially after seeing a lo-pro Edge w/ piezos on eBay a couple of months back. I would have fought harder for it if I *knew* it would work.)

Examples of Crappy Distorted Guitar Tone
darc replied to killertone's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
That buzzy ring mod crap that pops up in the middle of Paranoid is pretty bad LOL. But much like the sizzle of the Beatles' Revolution, I wouldn't want it coming out of my amp, but for the purposes of the recording it adds a timeless signature. I dunno, I like the tones on Painkiller. The solos are searing. Around the same time, Geezer's recorded bass tone became just about perfect, I've recently noticed. -
Sustain block. And that Korina sure is purdy.

From said Ferrari forum: "I suspect that he'll get better" Hahahahah... oy, now I've gotta add a Ferrari Chat Forum to my favorites list... This'll be like watching a car wreck. I've been told by a lot of good people that Joe is actually a very nice guy in person, but it seems like typing makes him insane. (And yes, I *am* embarassed that I find it so fascinating.)

Tobe you SCUMBAG! Man, some things never change.

It's not warped, it's just trying to get the hell away from that rose. Peter, a sufficiently large hinge forged in platinum, and you might have a deal.

"1) My god, that is an ugly mofo." So how do you feel about Cali's? In the right finish, it's basically a Cali, just more petite and w/ longer legs. Or, to simplify the analogy: dead sexy. IMO etc. "2) Uli Roth would be the only guy who could possibly want one of those, (and I don't mean it in a positive way)" Good enough for Uli, good enough for me. Granted, it's not an entirely practical instrument (for all applications) and the price is difficult. Tob's right though, when a piece is this uncommon, the price can only be determined by one thing: what it takes to make the owner part with it. Joe's BIN's pale in comparison to what it would take to get mine. The korina one really has grown on me, but I don't think the BIN is justifiable given the mods. I'd consider the opening bid if I were still collecting, but thank God I'm over that (for the time being.)

Polically active bands...whatcha think?

atquinn: " Is what most bands have to say about politics any stupider than what they have to say about anything else? Personally, I find nu-metaller whining far more offensive than just about any political song I've ever heard" A-fugging-men. And it comes around to sojourners previous point about METAPHOR which is apparently a word these nu-metal and emo kids have never learned. Understatement etc are clearly not part their arsenals either. It's a shame, some of these bands really don't sound all that bad, but as soon as the vocals kick in I have to hit the dial. It's like listening to a bad actor on amphetamines read this script: VOX (center stage): MY MOMMY/DADDY DIDN'T LOVE ME VOX (center stage): ALSO, YOU'RE A BAD GIRLFRIEND VOX (center stage): I DON'T FEEL TOO GOOD VOX (center stage): THIS MEANS I'M COOL AND/OR DANGEROUS VOX (center stage): WAAAAHHH Whatever you have to say, for god's sake if you can't say it artfully then just go talk to your pals/ shrink/ neighborhood bartender. Or start a diary. -
"Next time set up a dummy mic that you've smeared with dog shit." Tell you what, I'll give you half a twenty to take care of that mic, the other half when I get it back clean.
-
The best audience idiots are the one's who find the mic you're recording the gig with. (No matter the obscurity of its location, someone will find it.) I've gotten conversations on tape that top any lyrics I could ever write. Then there's always some a$$hole in the know (typically a friend of the drummer's, why is that?) who feels compelled to walk up to said mic (during your best performance of your favorite song, ever) and say goodnight to the band. Yes, we'll all be just thrilled to hear from you when we're playing back the CD in the morning... Grrrr.

Paranoid is my least favorite (early) Sabbath album. It's like the caricature portrait of Black Sabbath with toon-tunes like Iron Man etc. Shame that's all some people have ever heard. I'm a sucker for the more progressive stuff like Sabotage, but even where the primitive heavy stuff is concerned I'd take Master of Reality or Volume 4 over Paranoid any day. The first album is a heavy hitter just in terms of sounding hauntingly British. Hard for me to be objective about *any* Sabbath pre-Technical Ecstacy or so since those albums are all I listened to as a kid. (Don't get me wrong though, Planet Caravan, Hand of Doom, Jack the Stripper... fabulous stuff.) (Oh then there's War Pigs... ah forget it, I love everything this band did until about '78.)

Jonathan - back re: Minefield. My wife was embarrassed to admit (after I implied that Minefield was such a rare find LOL) that she bought it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=music&n=507846 Reviewers say 5 stars and I agree. I also read that Robin Zander is a fan and these guys toured with CT at one point (near-HFC content.) But if you buy don't expect an "important" album. Crank up the subwoofer and your sense of humor.
