tips or tricks for learning tunes off a CD?
Jimbilly replied to Jimbilly's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I laughed aloud! it's probably in the neighborhood of 50 repetitions to get them solidly committed to memory, plus or minus based how quick the learner is to memorize. I imagine I'm on the slow side, but with practice it would probably get quicker. However it turns out, it will be a good learning experience. My Cali std iridescent with emg's will be perfect for this. -
I stumbled into the opportunity of auditioning as rhythm guitar for my friend's band (rock originals, just a little bit heavy-ish) seems like it would be super fun! I'm starting out learning 3 tunes off a CD, is there a better way than just playing along over and over? Chart them out?

I just watched a video on youtube about Fesley tele style available through Amazon, really great review. They have grover brand import tuners and wilkinson brand bridge/pups $200 ish).

before you give up on a scratchy pot: trumpet valve oil
Jimbilly replied to Jimbilly's question in Ask the HFC Experts
I've never tried it on an amp, I don't know if there would be a difference given that amp pots run at some small voltage I assume? -
aka the "SS zero", not sure if this has been talked about here before. It looks to be in better shape than mine (mine with dots), crowns make this one a bit rare/special I think. I've come to accept the Kahler on mine. https://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Hamer/Used-Hamer-Prototype-II-Black-Solid-Body-Electric-Guitar.gc?algoliaQueryID=aabe0c37927c3954380a96cf42f9511d&algoliaIndexName=guitarcenter

if only there was an easier place to source it from.... this is what I've been using, a lifetime supply for about $10 https://www.amazon.com/Al-Cass-Fast-Valve-Oil/dp/B0002OOVHM/ref=sxin_17_pa_sp_search_thematic_sspa?content-id=amzn1.sym.b8835974-eacc-4ffa-8f77-b14ee5f0007c%3Aamzn1.sym.b8835974-eacc-4ffa-8f77-b14ee5f0007c&cv_ct_cx=trumpet+valve+oil&keywords=trumpet+valve+oil&pd_rd_i=B0002OOVHM&pd_rd_r=a4cd05b0-3f1d-4db9-90fe-08cfa9e5bcfd&pd_rd_w=9OHR2&pd_rd_wg=oWAb8&pf_rd_p=b8835974-eacc-4ffa-8f77-b14ee5f0007c&pf_rd_r=X1NYV0MN26JH7F3S08CK&qid=1764008697&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&sr=1-1-e169343e-09af-4d41-85b1-8335fe8f32d0-spons&aref=YVap5q5OEj&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9zZWFyY2hfdGhlbWF0aWM&psc=1 -
before you give up on a scratchy pot: trumpet valve oil
Jimbilly posted a question in Ask the HFC Experts
I think I've mentioned this before, it's worth repeating. A couple of weeks ago I bought 2 used 15-20 year old Ibanez, both had really scratchy volume pots. I sprayed both out with Caig DeOxit, both were still scratchy, I cleaned with plastic safe electronics cleaner and then Caig again, still not perfect. I dripped some trumpet valve oil into the pots, and they've been perfect for 2 weeks, I've had similar experience previously with the small EMG pots, - this seems to be more of a thing with the cheaper import pots than CTS. I'll give credit to Pesocaster who told me about this. Before you give up and get out the soldering iron... -
what I don't get is: the asking prices for import "Hamer" Standards, there's one listed fs near me for $1500, made in Korea, I can't imagine it's any better than a Firefly Destroyer/Explorer style for $219 currently on Amazon ("dude, it's just a decent MIK guitar that says 'hamer' on the headstock). I played this Ibanez ART300 Caiman at church this morning (pretty big nice sound system), it sounded great. Guitars like this turn my preconceptions about price/quality upside down. I paid under $150 used and had to do setup and basic repairs, market value is around $300, so it's kind of in that same category, and a really good guitar, - although the two AA battery preamp is a bit odd.

Some of the stupid cheap stuff is really playable, it's great to have something cheap that you can actually play and don't have to worry about. I'm wondering if there will be any ridiculously cheap Black Friday deals. I might be tempted beyond what I can bear if something like an IYV jr gets even cheaper. One of the good Indonesian or Vietnamese builders would be wise to make a copy of a standard, especially given what Korean examples seem to be selling for, - Firefly or IYV should just make Standard cases to start with!

didn't all the OEM OBL's have writing on them?

given the subtle differences between some of the tech 21 stuff I've compared, and that a Marshall is "just a modded bassman", along with how much I like the Plexi Deluxe, my guess is you'd be pretty satisfied with the blonde, - but more pedals = more fun too... Since this thread is still going, here's a serving suggestion: I used the Liverpool as the B channel DI, I think it worked pretty well. Pretty funny that I owned zero of this gear 1 year ago. First in line is a JHS Morning Glory, the white pedal is a TC Elec Mimiq. A bunch of money was spent on a rewire and new sound board, and there's a lot less noise in the house, I was able to use the plug in power supply and the Joyo battery was just in case there was too much noise plugging into house power. The Vox Pathfinder is just for my personal monitor, and it works great for that.

too bad there's no list of Ed Roman builds

for low price imports, you're probably getting Cort if it's from Indonesia, and IYV if it's Vietnam?, who knows if it's from China? so the brand name isn't all that important (with the exception of PRS, which from the Philip McKnight video has it's own shop/building at Cort). Based on my experience with two from Amazon (an Eart and a IYV) I would lean towards trying an IYV off Amazon, those are just crazy cheap (Leo Jaymz get similar reviews at that stupid cheap price point, but I haven't tried any of those). I read someplace that IYV makes Harley Benton, I had one of those last spring (HSS, ss frets, decent bridge, locking tuners) I liked it. I actually like and play the <$300 fan fret headless IYV 5 string bass I bought a few months ago, I've showed it to a couple of other local solid players and they agreed that it is actually kind of good. Keep the packaging and send it back if you get a bad one. -
PSA Tilting Amp Stand
Jimbilly replied to Pieman's topic in For Sale - Wanted to Buy - PIF - eBay & Other PSAs
I have an early version of that one where the uppler L parts don't fold down, it does take up quite a bit of space and stays home most of the time. I bought a $10 folding tiny one from sweetwater, and usually wedge/lean the small amp up against a wall or fake potted plant. -

that's pretty neat, I had imagined something sort of like that but just out of wood, and from looking at his photos: you could make one with 3 pieces of wood and no fasteners: the sides would be similar shape, if a bottom connector piece was cut correctly it would have cutouts that slide into cutouts in the side pieces and the weight of the amp on the connector piece would keep it all together. I'll ask my 92 year old dad to make me one! - he'll even paint it green for me like he does to everything he makes. Of course the downside to having 3 pieces and no fasteners is the inevitable "where's that missing piece?" moment.
