NBD (nhc) cheapo IYV 5-er off Amazon
Jimbilly replied to Jimbilly's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Yup, that's the one I was looking at too. A couple more observations, I played it for 3 services yesterday morning. (if any of you are more interested, pm me and I'll send you a link to the livestream, since it's a church service, and certainly not a pro gig, I won't post the link publicly) stable tuning with just a couple of very minor adjustments in a chilly room, 7am - 1pm. There's a 'whump' noise in the volume pot when set to active while turning up from about "7-9" (I hadn't previously noticed that noise at home, but our soundguy likes loud bass and we have a pretty big rig, so I heard it through the subs), but otherwise pretty quiet on active mode: "hiss"/noise on par with my other active basses. I do most all my eq outboard with the bass Fly Rig, so I just ran it passive, and it is dead-quiet to the house running passive, I actually really like the tone of the passive mode. I'll spray out the volume pot with some cleaner later, if that noise persists 'active' will not be very useful live, without having to add a volume pedal. But: I'd be happy with passive on this one and just pull the battery. I do like active as an option; rolling back to the bridge pup and adding some bass often makes a nice growl, - we'll see. (edit/update: 'whump' noise seems to be gone after a squirt of Caig Deoxit. There's still a click when switching from active/passive if the the volume knob is up at all from zero/off) There's a little bit of 'extra fret' on the treble side next to the string, kind of like the bridge wasn't centered quite right, but it doesn't seem to be a playability issue. 8 pounds even on my fish scale, and it fits in a regular guitar soft gig bag -
NBD (nhc) cheapo IYV 5-er off Amazon

And I made a short crappy youtube video about what I would have liked to have known prior to purchase (I expect some ribbing/criticism from y'all). What I forgot to mention was that the knobs were all a little 'rough' to turn, but that's because they're all push-on knobs and the packing was so minimal that the knobs all got pushed down against the finish during shipping I assume. I had to loosen the truss rod just about a half turn too, it made a little creaking sound, but all seems to be ok. -
I've been eyeballing the current fan-fret/multi scale 5ers from Ibanez, I was waiting for the right deal to come along, but noticed the IYV multi scale headlesss (the first ten times I looked at it, I saw it as IVY) - on Amazon for under $300 shipped including tax (my state adds sales tax). Gotta be crap, right? But I started reading the reviews, and watched a few videos, and decided to take a risk, partially because the Eart headless guitar from Amazon has been so good right out of the box. It's pretty much what I had hoped for and expected, I think it will be a very good bass, at a fraction of what the name brands cost.

Single Coil Size Humbucker for Bridge Pickup
Jimbilly replied to Dutchman's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I seem to like most of the one's I've had: DiMarzio has the stacked HS2 and HS3, I've got the hs2 in my old 'strat'. The side-by side duncans sound good to me too, I just sold a mim strat that has the mini '59 I think, that went well with the stock singles. I had a t-51 with a screamin demon, great guitar but the deal breaker was the weight on that one. -

But it's comforting that Satch got some $$ from them. -

I'm beginning to suspect that the gig bag I bought at a pawn shop might not be a genuine Fender product -
whatever happened to the 'buzz feiten' system? I don't see or hear much about it anymore

Removing Residue from Pickguard
Jimbilly replied to 1 bottlerocket's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
!!!!!! be super careful with the goof off or goo gone products, one of those will melt some finishes (personal experience), so I stay clear. The local expert refinisher/builder etc recommended Naptha to me a long time ago, it has never caused any damage, I have a quart can I bought ages ago, a lifetime supply it seems. WD 40 has always been a good choice for sticker residue, and has never caused me any damage. -
I have a hard time believing the 23 pounds claimed weight, that is really light, another source says 31 pounds, that is more believable. My Univox U45B is 22 pounds, with a vintage Jensen tiny magnet 12" speaker. I'll have to drag the Tech21 T-60 out from the corner and try it again, I wonder how that would compare to the 'new' stuff?

Carol Kaye Sets the Record Straight
Jimbilly replied to velorush's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I think she should accept, she's far more deserving than so many others in there, but I respect her decision, - good she'd getting some recognition either way: My old Hamer dealer store owner friend told me a story about being at NAMM about 15-20 years ago. While walking around, he was standing next to an older woman, looked again at her again and said "you're Carole Kaye!", they had a nice chat, she had been wandering around NAMM being completely unrecognized until then.- 1 reply

end of show encore solo

At Jazz Alley in Seattle, always a great show ("always" meaning I've seen him and his band twice now). More of a smooth jazz groove thing than fusion, imo. He has also mastered the bass clarinet, I imagine he's competent on other reed instruments. He has a very impressive resume', if you are unawares.

and don't overlook the rest of that album, that's a good one

I picked up a bass the other day, stooopid cheap, tree fitty without the tree. Dirty and neglected, needed a .5mm neck shim, cleaning and a 'tune up'. Cool bass!, I'll go as far as good, not great, but good. I played it at rehearsal tonight, not disappointed at all. The headstock says "Aria Pro ii The Cat Bass Series": you'd think "bass series" would be self evident, but whatever. It's from Japan, '87, Matsumoku built. 8 pounds 1 oz, the only thing I don't like is the front strap button is 'on top', makes me think it might come off the strap is the strap is a loose fit. Don't pass by one of these if it's a good price.
