How to ship a rare and expensive guitar with case?
django49 replied to chap's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
From my own experience, the insurance offered by UPS or FedEx is worthless UNLESS you are a good friend of the local franchise owner. The saving grace was that when two shipments went south, is that (after running me around for a few months, then denying the claim, "But we really DO appreciate your business, sir!") I called the private insurer with whom I have my whole collection insured and they DID cover it. So, if you DO have such coverage, make sure you have fully documented everything. I have had a lot of experience with shipping many dozen guitars and have a pretty good idea on how to do it. But those two experiences soured me big time. Apparently Reverb DOES provide good coverage, but that implies selling through them, with all the attendant taxes and other costs. Building a huge crate SHOULD give you added protection, but that much extra weight also probably makes it more likely it will get dropped somewhere along the way. -
Huber Redwood for sale soon
django49 replied to django49's topic in For Sale - Wanted to Buy - PIF - eBay & Other PSAs
Sorta surprised. The initial contacts did not yet find a buyer. Anyway, Haig has now listed on Reverb. Quite sure a bit can be saved if contacted directly. A person would be hard pressed to find a better one at this price. Exactly as per my original order. Hubers are never cheap, but as another Don sang...... (FWIW, I have kept two Redwoods. Why did I sell this one? I liked the one with korina body and neck (and other pickups) a wee bit better. The other, is not nearly as nice looking, but does have the solid Brazilian NECK, which makes for an even "bigger" tone, IMO). https://reverb.com/item/84279140-nik-huber-redwood BTW, that D'Pergo he has listed is very appealing.....IF I was back in a buying mode...... https://reverb.com/item/83801415-d-pergo-fft-signature-limited-2021-moss-green-metallic -

I would add to the comment re the pickup configuration not looking familiar for the early 90s. At least from what I recall from 30 years ago. Also, FWIW, PRS does sometimes stamp the serial number into the wood. The example of that which I have readily at hand is a Wood Library "Ted" with a rosewood neck.

"I smelt da rose down in her hair". Subversive Commie interference in our country! No wonder the FBI was on it. -
Thanks, but I'll stick with Vinnie's pride and joy.......

Eclipse 12 String on Reverb

Unless my memory is failing me, that is a Chaparral. Sort of an odd bird in the sense of a 12 string shredder. -

FWIW, there were a few more 12vers out there. Here is an old picture from before downsizing. I still have the Newport and the Duo-Tone. Was there not also a 12 string Prototype? (Please don't ask, neither is for sale). -

Ask Joe Walsh what his fondest guitar-related memory is and he’ll tell you of the day his first guitar, a Sears and Roebuck Silvertone, arrived at his doorstep. Ask Joe Walsh about his worse guitar-related memory and you get this: “Falling out of a tree and breaking the neck of my Gibson Les Paul.” It was, at least, a fall that taught him not to venture into trees with nice guitars, which is perhaps one of the most valuable lessons a guitarist can learn. -
What’s your 2nd favorite guitar brand after Hamer?
django49 replied to draelyc's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Hard pressed to beat my (ONE!) Shishkov. Seems unlikely I will be able to add the second I had hoped for. A dude in California may fill that gap.....Grez Guitars. Waiting until he adds the option I am seeking. I have nothing but respect for Nik Huber. I do think Frank Hartung is every bit as good, with (arguably) a touch more personality. Or call it quirky. I have had a few chats with David Myka and would likely commission a build IF he ever reopens his order book. (He and I have compared notes on woodworking projects). Do love the guitars of Ron Thorn. Currently have 3, 3 of which are as good (and good looking) as anything I have ever had. But his prices have skyrocketed after the Fender days, so I doubt I will ever pick up another. (A lovely example recently posted at around $17k). Similar for Scott Walker (4 year backlog, not taking orders). Prices seemed to START at $10k last they were posted. I really SHOULD sell the 2 I have left...... Rick Turner goes on after the death of the founder. They are something a bit outta the ordinary. Def worth checking out if you get a chance. If I get a chance I MIGHT try their Electroline. Would be a good stable mate with the Model One. Lots of things to ponder, not too much incentive to actually "invest" further. 😏 -
Limited exposure.....A friend had one. I was very impressed. Great tones in the vintage U.S. mode. If I were not already committed with Swart, I'd have been tempted to pursue one myself. With the two channels and attenuator, it is a bit more versatile than the Swart. I think the built in effects are pretty much on a par with the Swart (one of its strong points). Not sure that is enough to give you a strong push one way or the other.

I have mentioned a few times the local scene, with "Jam Session" classes as a way to get folks outta their basements and play with others. About a week ago, there was a performance at a local theater with five combinations of people from the classes playing. (I was NOT a part of any one them, so your eyes and ears are safe, though I have played with most of these folks at one time or another). I thought some of you might appreciate a few samples. (Note that the sound was better live, as this is all captured on a small mic off center). MIla is a real dynamo. I have had the chance to play with and behind her on material ranging from Ray Charles, Doc Watson, Bonnie Raitt and Fleetwood Mac (Stevie Nicks) covers. She is really good. These young whippersnappers are also so good. This is the first time I heard them in a JAZZ mood. These guys have been playing together a bit. This one marred by the sound system that had leader (Steve on the LP Custom) hard to hear. One more nod towards the value of getting out and playing with people. (Note that some of the folks on stage really only had one or two actual rehearsals all together before that evening. But spending time in the classes is a great headstart. It has helped my playing a LOT).
