Dutchman Posted October 13, 2025 Posted October 13, 2025 Like the title say's! I searched and found out enough to know I needed help. I'm looking for a newer model with the long neck tenon. SG historians let it fly. Quote
RobB Posted October 13, 2025 Posted October 13, 2025 The 60s SG RI I owned had the long tenon. (Not the SG/LP model). 1 1 Quote
bubs_42 Posted October 13, 2025 Posted October 13, 2025 Just stay easy from SG Custom’s, Derek Trucks models and you will probably bee fine. SG lovers really get lured into the SG Custom and are sorely disappointed. They just carve out all that wood and a fair number of them have wobbly or loose neck joints. The Derek Trucks models, didn’t appear to have a clean neck pocket that fit well. Both 61 Reissues I have owned were really stable, the recent SG Specials I have played have had “WeaK” necks, if you just lean the guitar forward you can audibly hear the guitar detune. I have a 1964 Junior that IMHO is the best 60’s Junior, a freaking great almost 59 Carve, solid as a rock, and resonates as good as any guitar I have played. So what do you need? A Standard, Special or a Junior? As for a Standard or 61, I would buy a 90’s SG, I would find a mid/early SG Special, they have great necks, and sounds great. Then you have the junior, look for the 2019 or later. I ended up buying a PRS Mira Core. I had one a long time ago, but I found one with a Pattern Regular Neck. 6 1 Quote
Dutchman Posted October 14, 2025 Author Posted October 14, 2025 (edited) Thanks to all! I have an Eastman DC Jr with a NC Fralin in it. Feather weight, I rate it with the custom shop Jr's I tried. So I'm thinking the 60's reissue is gonna be the ticket. I just looked at the new Custom Shop models and I personally don't think they're worth what the hang tag is asking. I still have my old friend Hamer Special, just looking for something else to play for a while! Edited October 14, 2025 by Dutchman 2 Quote
RobB Posted October 14, 2025 Posted October 14, 2025 Current new price for ‘61 RIs is $1999. I’m sure you can find a used, 2010-20s SG for much less. 1 Quote
murkat Posted October 14, 2025 Posted October 14, 2025 Custom shop sg’s will have long tenon. But… the area is still soft due to a neck pickup route and thin body. Always check for neck wobble prior to purchase. (double cut specials are even worse in neck wobble) 4 1 Quote

I’m clumsy AF, not the best candidate to own one. Quote
Dutchman Posted October 17, 2025 Author Posted October 17, 2025 (edited) That was a short search! I was hunting on my phone during movie night and my son asked what I was looking for. I told him a SG with a long Tenon. This morning he comes over carrying a guitar case and said if you like it it's yours. So I opened the case and this was inside! A 2002 SG Standard from what I can gather. Has the long tenon! He bought it new from WestSide music in LA. Never played it. Didn't like it, preferred the Strat I gave him. With this and getting my pain meds back it's been a fantastic week 🤗 WOW!!! Edited October 17, 2025 by Dutchman 6 Quote
tbonesullivan Posted October 17, 2025 Posted October 17, 2025 Eh, long tenon, short tenon, the body is to thin I don't think it matters. What does is the late 60s long neck joint, which is what the SG standards have today. The Standard '61 models do not have this, which is pretty much while I'll only ever own an SG standard. Quote
Dutchman Posted October 17, 2025 Author Posted October 17, 2025 That is the image I used to tell which tenon it has! 1 Quote
