Saul Goodman Posted November 24, 2025 Posted November 24, 2025 We've all seen the plexi shields surrounding drum kits for orchestral sets or acoustic sets. This is the first time I've seen these shields that look like it's to dampen cymbals. I have a friend who just got a hearing dog because he says the crash cymbal was always next to him playing guitar on stage right. I played in a band for about 1.4 hours when I was 18. Came out not hearing anything for a day. We really sucked too. I decided it wasn't for me. I can still hear fairly well. 1 Quote
hamerhead Posted November 25, 2025 Posted November 25, 2025 God what I wouldn't have given for some of those! My right ear is AFU for that reason. 2 Quote
tbonesullivan Posted November 25, 2025 Posted November 25, 2025 Those are NICE, but not cheap. I mean, the shield itself isn't expensive, but it needs it's own boom arm to hold it in place. Excessive on stage sound has always been an issue, and unfortunately there's no volume control for cymbals if you want that sound. They are just gonna be loud. 1 Quote
stobro Posted November 25, 2025 Posted November 25, 2025 With the last band I was in (10+ years ago-yikes!) always ended up playing in places with tiny "stages". Basically they would move a couple of tables and have the band set up there. I always ended up right next to the drummer, but only on his left. If I was on the right my headstock would bang into his cymbals, it was that tight. I'm well aware of cymbal-induced hearing issues. 2 1 Quote
velorush Posted November 25, 2025 Posted November 25, 2025 We had a guy in a couple of years ago playing these live - sounded like real drums to me and micing was simple! He was exactly loud enough with no shields. He (the drummer) said they take a little getting used to but feel pretty much the same as conventional heads and cymbals. 1 Quote
Jakeboy Posted November 26, 2025 Posted November 26, 2025 Yeah, I like being close to the drummer too….but too many heavy crashes will blow your ears right out. Yet everyone complains the guitar is too loud, lol 3 1 Quote
Jeff R Posted November 27, 2025 Posted November 27, 2025 Everclear uses those cymbal shields in recent times, along with Carondelet Dreambuckers 6 Quote
