sirDaniel Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Hit: for the song selection, execution, and performance w/ and w/out orchestra. Johns prototype signature guitar LOOKED fab. sounded exactly like his regular sig. I wanted to see this concert so bad.Miss: LaBrie is FAT. jeez. he can still sing well, but the image is gone.Sound quality on this DVD is TOO good; in a bad way. Sounds too flat like a board feed on everything.Still a buy for fans. Included alot of footage for $17 (amazon). JP is still wicked. All the rest of them are aging well. Myung kicks, Portnoy is unreal.
Mobster Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Dan, do you listen to any of the Chromakey, OSI, or Platypus stuff?
silentman Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 I saw the preview on VH1 classics this weekend. I felt the mix was poor, but I'm sure what I was watching will be different than the final DVD mix. We KNOW that tone is in the fingers. JP could have been playing a xylophone and it would sound awesome. Labrie looking tubby? I didn't notice. I'm not a fan of the Chomakey/OSI/Platypus stuff. I really like the Transtlantic project. Oh, and it's THEATER godammit!
MCChris Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 I'm not a fan of the Chomakey/OSI/Platypus stuff. I really like the Transtlantic project. Never heard any of those, but I really enjoy the Jelly Jam, particularly the 2nd album. Can't say the same for DT. They just haven't latched onto my pleasure centers.

Knowing the music you seem to be into, I'm not sure if Chromakey or OSI would be your thing.Chromakey is Kevin Moore's project (with Jim Matheos), and it's out there. Far out there. A lot of it is very atmospheric, soundtrack type stuff. Think "Space Dye Vest" on steroids.OSI is also a project with Kevin Moore and Jim Matheos, with Mike Portnoy on drums. A lot heavier than Chromakey. I try to stay away from the political leanings the lyrics seem to have-but I really dig the stuff.I'll make you another care package for the hell of it.
silentman Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Hey Greg, or anyone else looking for new bands in the style of DT... Check out Circus Maximus. They have 1 cd and it's great.

Sure, I'll check that stuff out. If it's "out there" (and more importantly, not to Lou's liking) chances are I'll enjoy it.
Craig Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 I was at that show, a little quiet for my taste, but a good show.
sirDaniel Posted August 29, 2006 Author Posted August 29, 2006 Dan, do you listen to any of the Chromakey, OSI, or Platypus stuff? No haven't gotten it yet, but want to.the content was awesome. Seeing/hearing the octa stuff live was great. And the orchestra was a groovy touch. I thought JP was actually looking a little buff. Maybe pumping up the guns. The flame maple signature was too beautiful. Six degrees was great. Setlist was great.I KNOW it would've been better to be there for real.
HAMERMAN Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 OSI is also a project with Kevin Moore and Jim Matheos, with Mike Portnoy on drums. A lot heavier than Chromakey. I try to stay away from the political leanings the lyrics seem to have-but I really dig the stuff.Plus Sean Malone on bass and stick (on the first album)!

Guest JackButler Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Also check out Ark or any of Jorn Lande's other project..his new album is great!Also..Evergrey..Circle II Circle..Freak Kitchen..Dreamscape..Stride..Thunderstone.. all really solid bands as well.
Mobster Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Well heck, while we're on a prog rock kick, I may as well get out my Ozric Tentacles and Kraftwerk discs again!
Guest JackButler Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Prog on Wayne!Prog on Garth!LOL! I think this entire year has big one long Prog kick for me.
Brooks Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 Well heck, while we're on a prog rock kick, I may as well get out my Ozric Tentacles and Kraftwerk discs again! hell yeah! i love ozric's "jurrasic shift" (bought a few more discs after that didn't do it for me). i wore out kraftwork's "computer world" tape during my brief punk/new wave phase in jr high. i want to like DT, they're great players, but they make rush sound soulful . as stike would say, their sound has "no ass init".
silentman Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 their sound has "no ass init". Doesn't need ass. It's got balls and chunk.
Travis Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 I picked up the cd and dvd on Tuesday when I was at the in laws' in Chicago. I listened to the cd twice so far (love that drive back to St. Louis). I'll watch the dvd sometime today. In my mind, DT can do no wrong. As far as the side projects/solo efforts, my favorites are Liquid Tension Experiment, Petrucci's solo album, and Jame's LaBrie's last solo album, Elements of Persuasion (it was pretty heavy). An Evening with Petrucci and Rudess is nice for the background when I'm nice and mellow.I heard a little bit of Transatlantic and it just wasn't my thing.

Brooks, since you like OT and Kraftwerk, while I'm making my stuff for Chris and Dan, It's no problem for me to make a 3rd copy for you. I'll have it done today. You may dig it.

Brooks Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 since we're talking prog, anybody ever listen to Bruford? the stuff w/ holdsworth is pretty cool. seems to straddle the fence between prog & fusion, which is kinda hard to define for me.
