Steve Haynie Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Bad news... Freddy Fender is suffering from incurable cancer in his lungs. I just heard about this on the radio.Read more at the official Freddy Fender web site.
peedenmark7 Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 very nice man.met him while my dad was playing the western circuit back in the early '70s.
shankyboy Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 A friend of mine grew up with Freddy's kids in Corpus Christi and he said that they had a juke box outside by the pool that only had one song on it. Elvis' Blue Christmas. He said that Freddy would come home drunk and play that song over and over again and sing along with Elvis.
Kurt L Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 I met him once on a flight between Corpus Christi and Dallas, very nice guy. Only saw him perform once, that was with the Texas Tornados. I've lost four members of my family to cancer so this brings back a lot of bad memories. BTW, his real name is Baldemar Huerta. Sorry to hear how he and his family are suffering.
tomteriffic Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 Sorry to hear that, the man's a legend. Folks around here in Ohio give me some strainge looks when I get on a roll about Freddy, Augie Myers, Doug Sahm and the rest, but that's a way cool, way fun kind of music to play and to listen to. Just IMHO, the Texas Tornados was the finest outfit Freddy was associated with.
shankyboy Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 It is sad to think about the Texas greats that are leaving us. Rocky Morales was the sax player that sometimes played with the Tornadoes. He passed away a few weeks ago from complications due to cancer. The only 2 Tornadoes left are Augie and Jack Barber. I think Augie will live forever.
