gerry Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 hi i bought a hamer two coil from 1981. it comes with a humbucker and a single coil. the scratch plate fit to this configuration. the orginal scratchplate for the two single coils was included.the pickups don t look original. my questions:which pickups were used originally. i guess dimarzio can i look for the correct single coils in ebay under vintage dimarzio single coils? maybe someone from the board has the two correct single coils.was wookwork necessary to install the humbucker? is it possible that the humbucker came already installed by hamer. i don t have the guitar already therefore my questions. brgds gerry
tomteriffic Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Conrad, there's a one-off guitar floating around Europe someplace which has a Prototype-ish body but was equipped originally with two separate single-coil pickups (in more or less the traditional neck and bridge locations, both of them slanted). This may be the one that Gerry has? I'm guessing that, at that age, the original pickups may have been Dimarzios, but I've no idea what model or if they were custom made, or what.Wiser heads will be along soon.
serial Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 The Two Coil was a limited run of guitars produced for a German distributor in 1981. The Two Coil is essentially a bound flametop Prototype with a pickguard and two single coil pickups. There were 20-30 of them made in all from what I can find. Most went to Europe, but a couple stayed behind in the USA. The humbucker would be aftermarket and would require routing of the wood I would guess (Having never been under the hood of one of these though, I can't be 100% sure and a pickguard covers up the route anyway. The pickups will not be easy to find-they were the same Dimarzios that were used in Prototypes and Phantoms. I don't know that anyone's been able to decipher which Dimarzio they were based on, but the mounting legs are different than anything Dimarzio stocked.

HamStd Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 I have to agree with Steve on this one. I remember seeing this guitar awhile back and I think most recently it was listed on ebay. I don't believe the humbucker is original. The easiest way to tell is by removing the pickguard and seeing if there was a route (obviously would not be finished like the rest of the guitar) but the 2-coils that I have all are routed for just two single coil pickups. Of course with Hamer there aren't alot of rules back then on what people could custom order. Also, not all the 2-coils had bound tops some were exactly like the 80's specials with the veneer coming to the edge but no binding. Either way, nice guitar. Peter.
gerry Posted January 22, 2007 Author Posted January 22, 2007 thks my friends. your comments make me feel better.
belgian Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 As it has a sustainblock, it's a cool guitar !
gerry Posted January 22, 2007 Author Posted January 22, 2007 belgian, your prototype which you show on the photo is beautiful. it has a great wood grain.
serial Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Peter is correct-I overstated the binding thing-most of the ones I've seen have it, but yours is the second or third I've seen w/o it. VERY cool guitar!
HamStd Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 Gerry: Here is a shot of mine. Actually I recently got one from a very nice European HFC'er without the bound top that could pass as the brother of yours. They are Great guitars. Congrats on a great score. Peter.
gerry Posted January 24, 2007 Author Posted January 24, 2007 peter, i know the guitar you mention. is it from jochen. i saw his guitar on his website already some time ago and found it here again when he offered it for sale. why the hell he sold this guitar, as he even knew what it is. check the serial number of yours may be it is close to mine. (the serial number of mine you´ll find on the photo i sent. brgds gerry

Rockola Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 I was smitten by the 2Coil enough to stash this pix. Don't know who this belongs to but I recall they were from Europe.
