Savage Amp test drive

Recommended Posts

Posted

I just returned from Savage Audio, where I picked up two of my Dr. Z amps that were in for repair. Their tech, Jeff, offered to let me test drive an amp or two after I told him that y'all were coming over next week. So, I'm going to stop down next week to pick up an amp or two.

Does anyone have any preferences of what they'd like to hear? I'd personally prefer one or two of the smaller combo amps or amp heads.

And any Savage owners please chime in. I've never played or heard any of their amps before.

Here's a link to their website:

Bruce, I have been very curious about both the Macht 6 + Macht 12 and would love to hear what you guys think of them.

Why not get one head and one combo if you have your choice of 2?

Amp heads are usually a bit tighter than combos.

Savage amps are suppose to have their own hybrid sound. The smaller ones supposedly don't have that much headroom - I would get a 12Watt combo if you can.

They are suppose to take pedals well. I happen to have a new pedal to try!

Also suppose to be very responsive to the guitar used and have very responsive controls.

Can't wait to hear one.

I'd love to try the Rohr 15, but anything in purple tolex would be sweet.

IMO, anything over 15 watts would be overkill.

One of the guitar players in one of the incarnations of my previous band borrowed a Glas 30 2 X 10" and it sounded like a chorus of angels singing. It was rather loud for a 30 watt amp, IMO.

We WON'T be trying that one. Angels are not allowed in the 4-3-2-1 Club. It makes the patrons nervous.

The Savage name should make up for anything angelic.

I guarantee you, you TRY you will BUY. They are sweet.

Bruce, as BD stated above, anything over 15 watts would be overkill for your basement. If Jeff has a Macht 12X (the X has an attenuator to take it down to 6 watts), borrow it. The Rohr 15 is about the best amp I've ever played through. I'm awaiting a Macht 12X myself. Should be here any day now.

Had a Macht 6 not much headroom and you can turn it about half-way anything over that compresses to much. Macht 12, Rohr 15 or the Glas 30 would be cool but I'm with Eric go for the Blitz and crank it up.

Eric Weston & Johnny Thunders - you guys ROCK! A Blitz 50 would be suicide in the 4-3-2-1 Club, but hey, combos are for pussies, right? Oh, and Eric, by the way...you were my favorite player at the HFC Jam I went to back in 2004. You would ANNHILATE through a Blitz 50 stack. Watch out Bruce!!!!!

On a serious note, I forgot to mention that the Rohr 15 now also comes in an "X" version with the attenuator. No change in tone folks, just easier on the ears.

Hey Eric - are you really going to bring a 4 x 12 ????

Let me know because if you do I will bring my Framus Cobra head.

Something tells me that:

a.) Weston was kidding

b.) If he wasn't, Bruce would put the kibosh on that. The only reason he lets me bring my 2x12 is because it's a Dr. Z and blends in with the backline.

BWAAA HAAA HAAAAAA!!!

Sorry dudes, there's no way I'm lugging one of those heavy bastards down those narrow stairs!!!!!

I've hurt my back twice this last year....both times were carrying one of those cabs up/down stairs.

I ain't 20 anymore (or stooopid  )

Tombo, I thought I was your favorite player at the 4-3-2-1... ; )

Eric, You need a roady!! When Ted was hauling a 4x12 to gigs back in the day we would always double team it, but stairs are killer. take it easy.

I'm really sorry I'm going to miss this next jam.

I just spoke to Jeff at Savage Audio. I'm stopping down there Friday morning to pick up a Macht 12 & a Rohr 15 demo model. Woo Hoo! He said they won't be pretty (they're demos) but they'll sound great. I'm looking forward to hearing these.
