cacophony Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Hi,I have a Hamer Centaura that I bought in the early 90's that I'm looking to sell because I haven't really played guitar in the last 10 years. I had it custom made to be exactly like the one in the ad below. The guitar is in absolutely mint condition (not a single ding), although it's definitely in need of a string change, fretboard clean, and possibly an action adjustment (I don't know; it's never been adjusted before). This guitar has been played very little since 1994 =) and I also have the original Hamer hard case in good condition as well.So what do you think it's worth? What should I ask for it?Thanks!

The black and white granite was a standard finish on the Centauras in 1990-1992 as was the offset fingerboard dots and Hum/sing/sing configuration. There are days when they will go over $500, but they'd have to be really clean. I personally think that that was the coolest finish for those, but I've seen a lot of them around. Not all were in great shape though. There was one like that on eBay for the past month or so that didn't sell at $650 (which was high for a Centaura IMHO). Have to check with some other HFCers to see what they've been going for.
atquinn Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Centauras get the least respect of all the Hamer shredders (even Diablos), so I would think around $400.-Austin

I agree that somebody in a rush to sell would only get $400.But being patient and finding the right buyer will yield substantially more, especially if you have one that's mint. For example, this one went for $830 (with shipping):http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=7411478504Here's one with dings and wear that went for $660:http://www.guitar-museum.com/guitar.php?ID=242There is a lot of value in these old USA Hamers. At Guitar Center you'd be hard pressed to find something nearly this level of quality for any less than $1500 - $2000. And the current USA Hamers start at $3300.
KH Guitar Freak Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 I may be interested, what pups are in her???
tobereeno Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 maple fretboards are a bit more rare, so there'd be a bit of a premium on those. The alder body kicks ass with the JB pickup in a Centaura.Put it up on eBay, see what the market sets the price at. I wouldn't hope for large amounts of money, but I think you'd get more than $400, especially with that particular finish.

Changed it out to a Custom Custom which worked much better with the SSL1 Vintage singlecoils, and also sounded great clean and with mild overdrive. With the Custom Custom that guitar became a beast and I still miss it, (damn it's hard to sell stuff.)
tobereeno Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 that's interesting - I've had the JB in mahogany, maple, and alder bodies, and found I only liked it (felt it was warm enough) with the lighter alder bodies.

Please e-mail me if interested! Thanks.

The first one is a Vintage S (actually not a bad price for one of those)The second one (which is a Centaura) is less common than yours ...and with upgrades ...(maple/EMGS etc...)I would expect something under $500 tops for yours (depending on the condition) and probably closer to $400, TBH ...but hey ...in the end ...it's worth what someone will pay for it, right? ...so you never know ...It's truly a shame that the basic Centauras don't get a better value ..because they are GREAT guitars ...same with Diablos ...

It took a couple months to find the right buyer, though. I'm sad to see the Hamer go as it was a wonderful guitar, but I just couldn't justify keeping it seeing that I never play it anymore.
KH Guitar Freak Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 Hamer shredders seem to be going up in prices these days...

Nice work.I sold it on Craigslist to a local buyer. It took 1-2 months. I think it helped that I took quality pictures (lit with off camera strobes) and had a good description.
