bizzwriter Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 I am a total Mitch Easter/Let's Active freak. About 8 or 10 years ago, I was chasing one of his old guitars up for bid on ebay -- as I recall, it was a watermelon green Hamer Special, probably 1980 or so vintage. For some reason I was offline when the auction closed and I missed out on buying it (I think it went for about $800).Any of you Hamer fans have this guitar, or know where it ended up? I suspect there aren't too many watermelon green Specials around...
cmatthes Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 I think he used that one in one of the videos off of "Big Plans", if I recall correctly. I'll have to check from home tonight. It's the one they filmed on Pilot Mt., west of Winston-Salem. Huge Mitch/Let's Active fan here too. David B. here did a recent CD at Mitch's Fidelitorium, I believe... Waters Part
polara Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Weird! I was just thinking about that guitar, as I was listening to a Velvet Crush CD and remembered some contest in the 80s? or early 90s in which you could win that guitar. Or some "watermelon green" Hamer of Mitch's.
serial Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Big Mitch fan here as well. Got to wait on him once at lunch when I was bartending in Winston in the late 80s and he seemed like a really nice, but quiet guy. Even though he was local, it was a real big deal for me at the time since I was such a fan of his stuff. I remember the eBay sale too-at the time, it was a lot for a Special, but I seriously considered it b/c of the Mitch connection.Dave's played bass live with him IIRC. THAT's cool.
bizzwriter Posted April 17, 2008 Author Posted April 17, 2008 I went through ALL the Let's Active videos on YouTube and didn't see the guitar. It's got to be SOMEWHERE...
David B Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 He has talked to me about that guitar before. I think he said it ended up in some kind of giveaway.By the way I live .8 miles from him & just started working part time (maybe full time soon) in his studio. He has a ton of cool guitars. He showed me an early 80s Gibson Moderne & I showed him my Yin & Yang Standards the other day. We kind of show each other cool stuff when we get together. If anybody wants to record there, let me know. Trust me, you get your moneys worth. He works his ass off!

Rockola Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 It made an appearance in the the video was In Little Ways, swinging in a tree, IIRC. I had it bookmarked for a while, but the last time I checked it was yanked for violation. My want too!

The stage hand left Mitch's mic stand set up very high, and while Mitch is talented in many ways, height isn't one of them. He came out, pulled down the mic to his level and muttered, "who does he think I am, Robert Plant?" Which was pretty funny, because right around that time Robert Plant was quoted in Musician magazine that he'd rather cut Mitch Easter's lawn than listen to most of the music on the radio. It was a great show. I played "Last Chance Town" with a band for years. BTW, am I the only one here who reads this topic and thinks about Zappa's "Watermelon in Easter Hay"? -Jonathan
polara Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Yeah, and Mitch's studio is pretty affordable. I called once and his rate is less than what I'd expected. David, can you steer me toward any of his more recent productions? I liked the Shalini stuff...
serial Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Good lord, I only WISH I had anything remotely worthy of Mitch Easter production! We're going to be doing some studio stuff in the next few months, but it'll be pretty minor and local..

We were working on remixing a James Taylor-ish type of project that was not recorded there. He did play me a super cool band that made a 4 track album there. They pressed records & CDs...http://www.myspace.com/birdsofavalon
