Scottcrud Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 I know a LOT of it is in his hands, but what kind of fx is he using on most of his solos? I know he uses his whammy bar for a lot of his vibrato, is he using a chorus or a delay on for example Comfortably Numb?
ArtistOwner Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Check out http://www.gilmourish.com/ for all the info you might want on Sir David. Enjoy!
Rhys Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 The main effect he uses on "Comfortably numb" is an Electric Mistress flanger. As a general rule Gilmour tends to play with a very clean sound and add any distortion with pedals, rather than using pre-amp distortion. Nearly all his pedals have been extensively modified.(The drummer in the band I play in is Gilmour's stage manager/drum tech, so I've been lucky enough to see his guitar rig up close a few times).
Scottcrud Posted May 9, 2008 Author Posted May 9, 2008 Rhys, Have you met Mr. Gilmour? Is he nice or is he an asshole? He and Tony Iommi are pretty much the only two of my guitar heroes I'd like to meet.
Rhys Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 I've spoken to him briefly & he's a really nice person. One of the conditions for my being allowed to hang around back stage, watch sound checks & stuff was that I didn't hassle anybody (especially Gilmour) which is fair enough. He came over & chatted to me for a minute or two & he was very friendly & polite.
geoff_hartwell Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 This is a great place to go: http://www.petecornish.co.uk And a great place to go on: http://home.comcast.net/~jroscoe/index2.html Is it Sir or Commander?

I've been convincing myself not to look into one of those, but now . . .The guitar pic posted in your signature has to be one of the most stunning guitars I've ever seen! Amazing! Do you own it? I'm a sucker for blonds... i.e my wife!
seeker Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 Yes, tis mine. I custom ordered it from Hamer to my specs in 04. It plays like a dream too.
Scottcrud Posted May 10, 2008 Author Posted May 10, 2008 Thanks for all the links, this is great. Gilmour is one of my favorite guitarist, and although I'll never sound like him, I can still learn tricks of his.
tombo Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 Trivial, but still on topic: The solo for Paul McCartney's "No More Lonely Nights" was by D.G. using a Fender Super Champ (tracked a bunch of times). I think I read that in an old GP magazine, IIRC.
Scottcrud Posted May 10, 2008 Author Posted May 10, 2008 Really? I never knew that. I know he did a solo or two on Supertramps Brother Where you bound album.
Willie G. Moseley Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 More trivia: Kate Bush was a Gilmour protege, and he appeared in her "Love and Anger" video (the one with the dervishes and the ballerinas) playing a hyper-rare and hyper-expensive original Gretsch White Penguin. Like he couldn't afford one.... Gilmour is one of those guys like Steve Cropper who could hit one note and you'd know who it is.
jisham Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 My Spider Valve has a Gilmour "artist preset" that nails his tone... Ah crap. I've been convincing myself not to look into one of those, but now . . . Nah...stay away from one. They're just Line6 crap modelling amps that couldn't possibly sound good.

My POD through a Marshall Stack at 200 watts... in the words of Hannah Montana, "I get the best of both worlds " Sorry about that cheesy quote, what can I say, I have a seven year old little princess. Haha!
burningyen Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 I suspect that in the studio for Comfortably Numb they pushed the Electric Mistress effect signal down in the mix. Going straight through an Electric Mistress gives you a very pronounced chorusy flanging sound, which you can hear on a song like Dogs off of Animals. More important to the Comfortably Numb solos are his rotating speakers, which give you that phasing whoosh. I've pretty much given up on trying to exactly replicate that tone, it's untouchable. But yeah, gilmourish.com is the place for your Gilmour gear questions. It's been invaluable to me.

silentman Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 But yeah, gilmourish.com is the place for your Gilmour gear questions. It's been invaluable to me.I'd say so Ben. Those songs on your website are awesome.
burningyen Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Thanks for saying so! Those clips were actually done using a POD XT and before I acquired a couple of my key stompboxes. That reminds me I need to ask the drummer to post a new version of Comfortably Numb, which I'm hoping will sound a lot better.
