quimby Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 A couple of years ago I bought a beautiful Monaco bass from Elduave. I always knew I liked it but I never took it to a full-volume gig (I did take it to a "play soft enough so everyone can talk dinner gig" once). Why? I think mostly just fear that something would happen to it...and I'm so used to (and happy with) my Cruise bass(es) that it's hard to convince myself to leave those at home. In any case...with some prodding...I decided to take it to a gig I had Friday night...and wow! I can't say enough good about it. It felt good to play it and -- honestly -- at "stage volume" the bass just came alive. It was punchy...clear..."well-rounded". I have nothing but good things to say about that bass! In any case...I just want to say excellent work to the guys at Hamer. They know how to do it right!!!
Guest pirateflynn Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 One of these days I'll get a Monaco Bass. I think they are so bitchin'!
elduave Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Glad you're enjoying Q. They *are* cool. I'd play one but I just can't seem to ditch the Fender bass shapes. Oh, if they would make me a new Cruise...
stobro Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 My Monaco Bass is the only new instrument I own. Normally, I buy used to avoid taking a massive financial hit when it comes time to sell. I don't consider resale value to be an issue here, because I can't imagine ever selling this bass.
cmatthes Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Oh, if they would make me a new Cruise... I've got a trade fer ya...
Thundernotes Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 What's the tonal character of these things? Do they sound similar to anything else? I know Jol had an hold Hofner in mind when he started on the Monaco bass. Can they get a Rickenbacker-ish sound? Of course now we have the Newport platform too...
Thundernotes Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 What do they generally weigh? Not much - they're chambered. I picked one up at the factory and the body alone was a feather. I'd guess 7 or 8 lbs?
quimby Posted May 19, 2008 Author Posted May 19, 2008 Glad you're enjoying Q. They *are* cool. I'd play one but I just can't seem to ditch the Fender bass shapes. Oh, if they would make me a new Cruise... Definitely enjoying the bass...even more now. I have no idea how much mine weighs. It's definitely in the "lighter" category for me (I'm used to a 5-string Cruise with a 2-tek bridge). And I'm no good at describing tone...and I'm not directly familiar with the Hofner and Rick basses. IMHO the tone cut through nicely...it was punchy...but what I really noticed was the clarity of it. It also was extremely comfortable to play.
currypowder Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 I can confirm that the bass sounded great from the audience. Although I didn't stay too long, I was at the show and the band sounded great. Quimby's a top notch bassist!

Quimby's a top notch bassist! You mean "top shelf" bassist. I only drink the best tequila. Thanks again for coming and hanging out!
