cornjulio Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Hmmm...That must have been a beautiful guitar before...too late now. It's a shame Halloween is over... Cruelbay:http://cgi.ebay.com/Hamer-Special-Ghost-Ri...A1%7C240%3A1318
paults Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 It may have been a solid finished Special to begin with. If so, strip it again - its already a refin : )If it was originally a transparent finish, that flame veneer might still be under there, as long as no one used sandpaper for either refinish job......

My guess is that it was sanded, and with an Astro Pneumatic Sanding & Polishing Kit 3050 right before painting the "really awesome" "ghost rider graphics" with a paasche H-set airbrush kit But again, it's just a wild guess on my part...
iownit4 Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 if u sanded that finish off it's possible there could be a nice flame under that ,I bought a special in bad shape and sanded ,and the top was real nice check out the pics ! Lowel guitars did the refinish work OH, and Maggio's did the electronics BKLYN NY
JustKid Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Did I miss something? I could assume that you put a binding on the whole guitar , that's neck and the body, then took out dots and installed crowns, but if you sanded it, where are the holes from the pots on the top of that nice maple? Top pic ( original) looks like the body is plain mahogany with no maple.
cmatthes Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 The original Special had a thin veneer (one piece) on it. He took off the finish, and had somebody retop (note the 2 pc top) and bind it. It looks like they completely redid the fingerboard too, but can't tell or recall 100%.The 12th fret crown inlay is checkerboarded to match the headstock decal too! That's a great finish.
JustKid Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 To re-top this guitar you have to get rid of the radius on a top side, and if I remember correctly it's about 4mm radius ( at least 3). And to take 3mm ( more than 1/8) off the top on a setneck guitar is pretty much impossible, because you do it on a wood planner and the fretboard will get on the way. Would be interesting to know...
