velorush Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Shouldn't the zebra pickup be in the neck on this one? Thought I'd ask before I got serious about a possible bid.1980 Hamer SpecialIt does look a bit better to me than this one because of the mini toggles:1980 Hamer Special #2They will probably both get out of my reach, but they're interesting.
bubs_42 Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 The first one is where it's at. Look at the Bridge pickup Zebra and then look at the wiring. It appears to be a Zebra Bridge with the Grey Lead. Correct me if I'm wrong but thats not very common. Hum 3 hours to Chicago...
velorush Posted December 13, 2008 Author Posted December 13, 2008 And the seagulls say, "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" "Mine!" (gratuitous Nemo reference). Look at the Bridge pickup Zebra and then look at the wiring. It appears to be a Zebra Bridge with the Grey Lead. Correct me if I'm wrong but thats not very common. Ah! That answers my question! Not very common, but it could be... Looking at the length of the lead, I thought it might be that the pickup positions had been reversed. Hum 3 hours to Chicago... This confused me too. He says it has always been in the Chicago area, but his location is stated as PA. Maybe he just moved there. At any rate, I have emailed him to ask the reserve price (don't want to waste my time if he has delusions of funding the down payment on his house). The second auction appeals to me from the standpoint of a good guitar to do some experimentation with. It would have to go pretty cheap though... Thanks for the help (and for any others that want to offer an opinion). This forum is a great thing for those of us trying to get our feet wet.

Ya the second one is solid and it would be great to swap pups and try different wiring tricks. Doesn't look like it will go much higher. Good Luck

Doesn't look like it will go much higher. Good LuckThanks. Just got ANOTHER listing on what appears to be a '91 Sunburst in trans red. I've asked a few questions, but BIN is $950. My head is spinning. Part of me wants to hold out thinking prices will get more depressed before they pick up again, but the other side argues: LOOK AT THESE DEALS!
tomteriffic Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 The second one, with the BL pickups & mini-toggles, is being auctioned by a member here (although he doesn't pop in too often these days). Good guy, deal with confidence.
ceeb Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 What he Said. John From Cali, used to frequent the board here quit a bit. Good Dood. I recall he had a mozillion T-51s. Or maybe justa strong like for them. Come to think of it......since he spends less time here Billy Wong has all but disappeared. hmmmmm...... Just kidding........ We all know who the real Billy Wong is/was. And if you don't know, Tough Shit, you ain't finding out, and though you think you are inner circle...........wrong,,,,,you're just delusional.
velorush Posted December 13, 2008 Author Posted December 13, 2008 All right, I gave in on the first one and bid it up to the seller's reserve. I asked him to calculate insurance and invoice me. Seems like a really good guy. Deal? We'll see in a few days. I'll post photos if anyone is interested. Do I buy #2 now just to have a guinea pig?
Feynman Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Buy all three, and pirateflynn's Sunburst, and all of Barry's. That would be a good start.

Hey if you got the funds, two guitars for just under or over 1g is a good thing. Those are great guitars, I love the Sunburst, but the Specials are all barebonesrocknroll...

Her reply was "got some place to put it?" My habit is becoming a domestic issue - My name is Jeff and I am a gearaholic. Okay everyone, together now, "Hello, Jeff!"

It is a very large club. Helll buy the second one mybe you'll like it better and you can send the first one my way. I wanted it but I don't like to bid against HFC'ers. Those guys are savages...
velorush Posted December 13, 2008 Author Posted December 13, 2008 Hey if you got the funds, two guitars for just under or over 1g is a good thing. Those are great guitars, I love the Sunburst, but the Specials are all barebonesrocknroll...I really wanted a Sunburst, but this will do nicely and for fewer bucks! I think it has both of the characteristics I was looking for - the checkerboard logo but being a late '80, it might have the earlier bridge spacing(?). Hello, Jeff, welcome to the club. It is a very large club. Hell buy the second one mybe you'll like it better and you can send the first one my way. I wanted it but I don't like to bid against HFC'ers. Those guys are savages...Thanks for your consideration. On another note, I guess this means I need to order the requisite checkerboard strap!
Joe G Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 The second one sold for $456!http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=270314124464
bubs_42 Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Yep, I fell asleep at the wheel and forgot about it. O'well. P.S. for my Birthday I went out and bought a few Checkerboard Straps.
velorush Posted December 18, 2008 Author Posted December 18, 2008 It's here! Came double boxed and better than I expected. Yep, it's a little banged up here and there, but I like it. Some observations: Serial number 0 2166, has the checkerboard stripe the Andrew Large article says started in late '80; side position markers are not close together, but don't seem as far apart as the 1982 example in the article. The bridge spacing appears more like the '1981 and up' example. The pickups are DiMarzios, I assume original, but the neck is creme, the bridge is zebra. This thing seems tiny! Though I haven't played it much yet, it seems very comfortable. I'll post photos when I get a chance if anyone is interested. Then I'll wear you guys out with questions (on the other board). I'm really curious about this reversed-color pickup configuration, the two pots that are supposed to be stock (like, what brand should they be?), and these transitional '80/'81 features. Thanks for everyone's help in this (my second Hamer) purchase. I started this thread to keep from doing something stupid and I think that, thanks to your help, I succeeded.
