velorush Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Okay, I just bought an '80 Special with allegedly original pots which turned out to be Mexican CGE pots. I'd like to return it back to as close to stock as possible, not for some anal "original spec" reason, but to get it to sound close to what it did originally. I have looked at two RS Guitarworks kits as I assume original pots and cap would be outrageously expensive. My question is, which would be closer to original spec? 1. the Ultimate Hamer Upgrade kit comes with two 500k Superpots and a 250k audio-taper tone control with a 0.015mF cap. 2. the Modern Explorer kit comes with the same Superpots for volume and a 500k audio-taper tone control with a 0.022mF tone cap. The best I can tell from the wiring schematics on the HFC site, the 0.015mF cap seems to be the more original choice. Was the 250k audio-taper pot coupled with the 0.015mF cap the secret to Jol's "tone control that actually works?"
ArnieZ Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 I'm pretty sure your Special had a 500k pots as stock. Some of the dealers on board have Hamer pots in stock and I'm sure you could get them from Hamer as well. As far as RS Guitarworks Roy is a member and poster, if you call him I'm sure he will advise you.ArnieZ

I have modified the topic of the post accordingly. Any information would be most welcome: availability, appropriate values and cap value. HFC is the best! Edit: This thread is a mess. My apologies. A quick Google search right after I posted this led me to BCR Greg. I'm such a noob.
HSB0531 Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Yes, I'd go with the original type pots. I bought some from Greg a while back.
Dutchman Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Yes, I'd go with the original type pots. Good thought, But I gotta say..... I recently bought several "Super Pots" from Roy, RS Guitarworks for a couple of Les Pauls and a Hamer P90 Special. All I can say is WOW!! All of the guitars opened up, Volume control improved without losing tone. Definitely something to consider when changing out pickups. The RS Supers are now the only pots going in guitars that do not have to stay original. So I gotta say Nice Job Roy.
BubbaVO Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Just curious, but would the Hamer pots/wiring harnesses do well with the Asian made Hamers? Are the sizes consistent between the USA and the Asian models?

I'm not really concerned with being original (otherwise I'd seek out NOS DiMarzios that IIRC were in it originally). I am interested in trying to get at the Hamer tone/taper, which may or may not be what the original DiMarzios had, or may just be clever marketing. I do know that I like the controls in my other Hamer (three years newer, with Hamer-stamped pots) and thought I'd give those a try after finding out they were still available. This I do know, the pots currently in the guitar are not acceptable as they have loose feel (can't land on a value) and jump all over the place through the arc of the range. I plan on rewiring my Gibby some time next year (with new pickups) and the RS Superpots are what I plan to use. Just curious, but would the Hamer pots/wiring harnesses do well with the Asian made Hamers? Are the sizes consistent between the USA and the Asian models? The RS site warns that they are not.
