seeker Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 You mean these: Power Wounds? How are they tensionwise, and tuning stability? They are actually cheaper here than D'Addarios. Yup, those are the ones! Tension wise, not much different than D'Ads, but not "slinky" like Slinkys. Tuning stability? Hey, the name says it all Seriously, I guess it would depend on the guitar, but in general just fine tuning stability. They come standard on Don Grosh guitars and Tom Anderson used to use them before he went on his Elixir kick (don't get me started on those....used to love them for their long life, but .....I'll stop). Thanks. I might give those a shot. If only someone published string tensions at a given gauge/tuning, that'd be great. The SOB Rock Formula has those qualities, plus they're slinky like Slinky's. Going to a website like "JustStrings.com" is a bit mindbending. Who's ever heard of Sfarzo stinngs? Not me. Got a good sales pitch (rounded hex core).
bobbymack Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 There's a huge thread (actually, several of them) on that douchebag Dean from SOS. Why the fuck people continue to order from this prick is beyond me.His customer service is ZERO and his strings are marginally better than over-the-counter strings that are available 24/7.+1And George Ellison at Acme is not much better...
Siaip Ciuvas Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 same issue - last order of 10 sets took 3 months to get delivered. I have emailed after a first month with a question "has my order been shipped?", got email that yes, they have shipped. Postal stamp indicated they where sent 1,5 month later than it was confirmed to me. Unfortunately theese strings work magic for me and I am planning to take another batch soon to cover myself at least for 12 months...
JohnnyB Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 And George Ellison at Acme is not much better...He sure got a lot of repeat business from Wile E. Coyote.
JohnnyB Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I've never been a big fan of DR strings. I concur with those who have found them to be inconsistent. For garden variety strings that last a long time, D'Addarios work. None of them ring my chimes except the Chromes because I like the sound and feel of flatwounds on some guitars and setups. For tone for the money, I like EB Rock'n'Roll pure nickel wound slinkys, especially on alnico pickup single coil guitars. For longevity and tuning stability, for the money it's hard to beat Dean Markley Blue Steels. Thing is, because the steel is noticeably tougher, it's also tougher on the frets, the fretboard, and your fingers. I find their tone brittle and edgey as well. I per It's a lot cheaper to change strings than do a re-fret or replace a fretboard. For longevity and tone, I like Thomastik-Infeld (TI) and Elixir. I've found that their longevity pays for the additional cost for the strings. I've heard the same said of Pyramid but have no direct experience. For a combination of warmth of tone and clarity, it's hard to beat TI Power Brights. They make magic on an Anniversary or Artist Mahogany HB. Unlike the DM Blue Steels, both TIs and Elixirs last longer, are softer under hand, are easier on the fretboard, and sound better. All the above strings are easily obtained either from local stores or (for a REASONABLE shipping cost) www.juststrings.com.
hardheartedbill Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I've been doing Fender Super Bullets for about a year now, I really like them better than anything I've tried, sort of a combo of SOS and DR w/o the price, BS or intonation trouble
seeker Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Johnny: Have you tried the regular "Infelds?I'm trying to latch onto a brand that isn't going to waver in quality (been down that road too many times recently). Outsourcing can do that. That's one of the things that has me quite interested in the SITs that Tombo recommends; they make them on their own machines in Akron OH. It appears that Thomastik-Infeld might be another.
bubs_42 Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Special K, D'Addario are just fine. I've tried them all, and out of all the "major" string companies (D'Ad, E.B., GHS, Elixir (<<by D'Ad), Dean Markley, Everly, etc.). Acutally, my personal favorite is S.I.T. electric & acoustic, but they're a bit expensive ($3.00 more here in Japan), so I just buy D'Ad. Yes, the European stuff sounds better (Thomastik, Pyramid), but they don't last much longer than regular D'Ads. Worst string life (IMO) were E.B. (Slinkys) and GHS (Boomers). Both last about an 30 -45 minutes and then they seem to die. All this string stuff is highly personal, but I think D'Ad is a good value, consistent, and they intonate well. YMMV. Try S.I.T. Power Wounds and I think you'll be surprised Badger Dave and E.A.P. Snake Oil? I think the name says it all. Again, IMO. Thanks, tombo! You reinforced my opinion of GHS Boomers (they suck)! Again, I've had no trouble with D'Adarrio's, and if it ain't broke don't fix it, in my book. Thanks to all! sk Had a bunch of problems with the GHS Boomers. Just wouldn't stay in tune. I bought a few packs loved them and bought some for friends, now they won't play any of the strings I sent them. I use Earnie Ball Classics "Pure Nickel" ... Use them on all of my Older Hamers.
Mindseyes Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Ive been rocking kurt mangan guitar and bass strings for a few years now and love love LOVE them!
