Turdus Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 Hello -- not looking for comparisons to Hamer. Just a similar message board, or web sites with information. Their web site does not appear to contain much. I am not interested in anything new they have to offer, but have seen some P and J type basses that I'd like information on. Their new stuff looks imported, but I am fairly sure that a lot of their stuff (older ???) is USA made.Any information would be appreciated.
hardheartedbill Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 there's not much on the old USA series out there. I know that Tom Anderson can answer some question about em. I've got one that Anderson says the neck was made in Japan, but fretted and finshed here. I will say the old ones are freakin great, everyone I know who has ones raves and will never consider selling, really nice vintage feeling stuff
Turdus Posted March 6, 2005 Author Posted March 6, 2005 Hey Bill -- how long has Schecter been around? What made me think of them recently was I whipped out VH II, and I believe that Michael Anthony is pictured playing a Schecter bass. Perhaps it is a Charvel, but I don't think it was a Fender. It looks like a sunburst P, but if I recall, it has a J pickup as well. Perhaps somebody who has the album can confirm. I just have the dinky CD artwork to look at. Then, the local indy dealer used to have a wall full of Scheter stuff. I never paid any attention. Getting back into bass recently, I am looking around, etc. Already done the Hamer basses. No complaints, but would just like to try something else.
Stike Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 Shecter has had a kind of Charvel-esque history with several different owners and locations. They spent some time in LA and Texas and back to LA. Tom Anderson, Phil Kubicki, and finish guru Pat Wilkins were all there in the 70's and into the early 80's. As far as how to date 'em and all that I have no clue but back in the day they made a bunch of cool Strats, Teles, and the like. It would be cool if there was an info. base about "vintage" Shecter, ditto for the older( pre Lynch ) ESP's which are also pretty dang kewl.
luiss Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 I suspect a lot of recent Schecters are ESP made, you can see their full line in ESP Japan website, alongside with Grassroots,Edwards,Seymour Duncan and Navigator, all ESP lines.
hepkat Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 A local music store recently had an older USA Schecter P Bass for $299. Not having any $$ I passed it on to a bass playing buddy. He had always been a G&L and Music Man player, but tells me the Schecter is every bit as good. FWIW
JohnnyThunders Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 I have this old Schecter Explorer up on eBayhttp://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...me=STRK:MESE:IT
tombo Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 ESP owns the Schecter name. Paul Rivera told me about the sale and said he's very good friends with Mr. Schecter (I say "Mr." cuz I can't remember his first name). Mr. S still makes pickups for the "Girl Brand" guitars. ESP makes Schecter U.S.A. models also in the L.A. ESP headquarters.
Guest cruster Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 Johnny...that looks more like a 'Wisconsin' shape than an explorer shape. Is that of USian origin or is it an import or any other history on those? Not that I'm in the market (although I wish you the best of luck with it)...it's just an interesting guitar.
thecajunboy Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 hey, whats this? Sniff, sniff. Smells like Outer Circle.
serial Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 80s Schecters were pretty decent guitars. I always dug the PT/Saturns that Pete Townshend played. I've had a couple and still have one (probably not for much longer-damned GAS!). Very well made for the most part.

JohnnyThunders Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 It's a US guitar from what little I know there is like no info on this guitar that I could find. It's a weird little guitar just not me. Back on eBay didn't sell first time probably won't this time either.
serial Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 Those were (from the info I have) offshore-made Genesis models. They also came in the version with the cutouts in the body like the one that Joe Perry plays in the Run DMC "Walk This Way" video. That one wasn't a Schecter I dont' think though. IIRC, the one Perry had was US made-the imports were bolt necks (don't know what Perry's was) and eventually had the solid body w/o the cutouts. Not sure about the accuracy, there is precious little out there, but I looked around a few years ago and that was what I came up with.
HamStd Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 Wasn't the mutant explorer-ish guitar that Joe Perry played in the Walk this way video a Guild. just like the singer from Autograph played one as well I think. Not that X-80 flipped over explorer thing but similar to it.Peter.
Mobster Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 Wasn't the mutant explorer-ish guitar that Joe Perry played in the Walk this way video a Guild. just like the singer from Autograph played one as well I think. Not that X-80 flipped over explorer thing but similar to it.Peter. You are correct I believe. The Guild Genesis.I have an ad for them from the 80's that I can scan.
HamStd Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 Mobbie: Now that you mention it, I think there actually was a Schecter Genesis guitar. With the cutouts in the body. I can't remember the link between that and the Guild model, but this tired old brain does seem to remember both Brad Whitford and Joe Perry using Guild guitars on the "Done with Mirrors" -first comeback tour.Peter
Mobster Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 Your making my head spin, Peter! Now I gotta look up the ad to see if it was a Schecter or a Guild...I know the ad was with Plunkett from Autograph, and it was the guitar with the cutouts. This is probably very far from the subject of this thread!
Stike Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 Wasn't there a similar guitar by Guild called a Blade Runner?
HamStd Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 Mobbie: you know I am just doing it to piss you off you "minty clean" guitar sort of guy.Actually I think the Genesis guitar was made by schecter but was an import model. I found this tiny pic. I think I have the catalog at home, let me dig through the files.Peter.
JohnnyThunders Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 Serial, Peter, Mobbie you guys never cease to amaze me with your knowledge about guitars and not just Hamers.
