My local geetar shop called me about a Chaparral (I think) USA bass they just got in. black, short scale, really light, sounds awesome acoustically, slightly beat up players cond. but nothing major. EMG's ...

They had it marked at $595 ... I offered them $300 ... whats it really worth, are these good basses?

Thanks!

Is it a 5 string?

Chaps were usually long scale. Also need to know if it's bolt or set neck.

Yeah, short scale would be a bit unique, bring a measuring tape with you tomorrow. If it has boomers it would be a good buy at the tagged price, but it's high for a regular Chap4 in players cond. $300 to $350 is about right. An yes, they are good basses. Here's a pic of mine, a '94 I think. I also have a setneck 5, this 4 is a bolt-on.

yeah! like that but, black w/out boomers ... I feel like such a dope for my lack of observational skills, I think I was in shock to see a USA Hamer anywhere in Santa Barbara! more later ...

Cool! I find that 'Virtuoso premium cleaner' is very good for making black black again, -just in case you're planning on blackening it up again.

Yeah, that's a fair price, you can't really expect to get a quality USA made bass for less (but people do still seem to find bargains). But I don't think you could flip it for much more, unless it cleans up really nice.

Agreed. Probably wouldn't get $350-375 for it on the open market today, but it's probably a very good playing/sounding bass. Most of these are and are well-made. Personally, for a Hamer bolt-on, I'd spend an extra $50-100 and get a newer second-generation Cruisebass. Those are out of sight.

:):P;)

Considering how much Fender P-basses go for, this seems like a good deal.

Turns out I know the previous owner of this Chap bass .... good guy. He traded the Chappie in for a P bass! I think he just succumbed to peer pressure :P
