tomjoyce Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 I'm thinking about putting one of these in my studio custom. I like the 59 neck a lot, but need a bit more out of the bridge spot. Anybody tried this pickup in a studio? Also, the schallers on this particular guitar seem to stick a bit, which annoys the crap out of me . What do I do, unscrew 'em a little? This is my one personal knock on Hamer, is grovers always felt a lot smoother to me than these things.
Brownsound Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 I just put a new set of covered SD pickups in my LP R7. I listened to the sound samples and I liked the Custom better than the Custom Custom. I dont know why but I just cant get into the Alnicos very much. I really dont like the Burstbucker pickups all of them seem to be ice pick city. I wound up putting a covered SD Custom in the bridge and a covered Jazz in the neck.
Armitage Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 I tried a Custom Custom in a Standard and didn't like it. It's too smooth for me and doesn't have much bottom. And I'm not a bottom chugga chugga guy either.
Travis Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 I threw a Custom/Custom in my Special FM and I like it. Normally I prefer my ceramic Distortions but I really love the mid spike the CC gives. It's hot enough that I get the sustain and harmonics that I like so much. I'm looking for another one for another guitar project I've got going on.
Nuclear Wessel Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 I have Custom Customs in several guitars, including a '91 Sunburst, which is pretty much the same as a Studio Custom. I like them a lot. The CC is not harsh like a JB can be, but has plenty of edge, mids and good output, so it sounds wonderfully crunchy and chunky through an overdriven amp.The CC has a smooth enough high end that it sounds good clean too.And if you're playing with gain, I think the CC sounds good with anything from a little blues overdrive to massive distortion.
LordOfTheThighs Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 I put a Duncan SH-14 Custom 5 in my Standard last week. It's a bit more output than what I had in it. But I wanted my Hamer to have more punch, so to speak. I also hung the guitar's original Duncan '59 back in it. The output is 14.4k ohms. It's basically a Custom Custom with an Alnico 5 magnet in it, instead of an Alnico 2. From Duncan's website: The SH-14 Custom 5 pickup was developed by an eager group of contributors to our web user group who replaced the ceramic or Alnico 2 magnet in an SH-5 Custom or SH-11 Custom Custom with an Alnico 5. Tonally, the Custom 5 is a compromise between these two pickups. It offers the optimum balance of warmth, punch, power and clarity. Compared to the SH-5 and SH-11, the tone is more vintage, with less distortion, but it’s still very strong and powerful. It’s fuller than an SH-5 with softer highs, more bass, and slightly less output. It’s got a great rhythm sound and a beautiful, deep singing lead tone. Clean sounds are rich and full with enhanced presence. Think of the Custom 5 as a higher output SH-1 ’59 with a deeper bottom end and expanded output.
tomjoyce Posted July 12, 2005 Author Posted July 12, 2005 The CC is not harsh like a JB can be, but has plenty of edge, mids and good output, so it sounds wonderfully crunchy and chunky through an overdriven amp. Thanks, that's exactly it I think.
mirageman Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 hi ive just removed a s.d. custom custom (sh11) from my 97 studio and replaced it with a s.d. custom 5 (sh14) ,it now sounds better again more punch than the sh11.the 59 in the neck works very well for me .also my schaller tuners are a bit crappy also the grovers are far superior
HamerHokie Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 The Custom Custom is my pickup of choice in a maple topped guitar. It sounds very similar to a fat, middy Duncan P-90 without the 'ragged edge.' I tried one in a mahogany guitar and it didn't sound so good.
MCChris Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 I tried one in a mahogany guitar and it didn't sound so good. Yeah, I had one in an '81 Prototype and it was pretty bad.
