hamerhead Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Upon Further Review: I actually like the shape of the body. It's that butt-ugly pickguard that just doesn't belong. Remove the pickguard, move the knobs and switch to the usual Les Paul location, add a Sustain Block, and you're good to go. .......And maybe an Explorer headstock............and maybe a S/S/H pickup config.................and maybe................
Brooks Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 uglier than a phantom (didn't think that was possible).
Steve Haynie Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Gibson's creative output nowadays isn't something for me. To me it looks like an attempt to design something that captures the spirit of the 60's/70's, designed by someone born in the 80's. There are many Gibson's I like but few models only that I like from their recent catalogue, mainly acoustic guitars or classics like the L-5. My interest in Gibson instruments started with the Explorer 2, RD series, Victory series, ES Artist, XPL series. There were designs that weren't typical for Gibson. But nowadays most of the stuff they do is based on Les Paul and SG models of which I am not a big fan of. What I liked recently is that they brought back some older models like Ripper/Grabber basses or the RD guitar (which wasn't that consequent, but shows that they still remember their past) or all maple instruments (Les Paul Raw Power). You nailed it. Instead of looking at things from a player's perspective Gibson is marketing fashion. Every now and then a guitar company or small time guy in his garage comes up with something that changes everything. Floyd Rose is one such person. Even though Gibson may own Steinberger, the innovations were made before Gibson bought Steinberger. Recycling nostalgia is only going to go so far until more people realize they are buying Franklin mint knick-knacks.
atquinn Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 uglier than a phantom... Let's not get crazy here. Nothing's uglier than a Phantom -austin
sw686blue Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 If someone barfs on that thing, then maybe, just maybe, it'll look somewhat pleasing.
Bennyboy-UK Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 You forgot a choice - "Who Cares?" How many SG-types are out there already (by other companies) that blow that thing into the weeds? Gibson needs to cut the horseshit and focus on QC. I guess I'm a nay. 100% with you on QC - plus I think its horrible and I can't imagine why they bothered - who would spend hard earned £/$ on that? Its so far past derivative its untrue. If they spent the same r&d budget on producing a decent SG junior in an early 60s spec I can't help thinking that they would have a very respectible Market for it. Nevermind, tokai got there first. Cheers, grumpy Ben. (who's been waiting for a 'proper' sg jr reissue for ever!!!)
