bmenary Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 I need a set of Mini Humbuckers-anyone got em?Barry
JohnnyB Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Which kind? The Firebird kind or the New York kind? Not that I have either. I do have a single Asian-made Johnny Smith style (New York style with a bracket to suspend it at the end of a fingerboard on an archtop). Duncan makes both kinds; Rio Grande makes an open coil version; Gibson offers the New York style with the P90 adapter rings.
serial Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 I have a NOS set of Bill Lawrence 450Ls. They don't have covers, so cosmetically they dont have the vintage look, but they sound a hell of a lot better than any mini hums I've ever played.
Bloozguy Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 I have a set of Duncans soon to be coming out of an Eclipse. I believe they are an SM-2 and an SM-3.
murkat Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 vintage gibson firebird mini hums here... hot and sizzling
jwhitcomb3 Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 I have two Gibson re-issue mini humbuckers (LP deluxe style) in gold. Bought new, never installed.-Jonathan
bmenary Posted January 18, 2010 Author Posted January 18, 2010 Wow- Thanks for all the reply's- I have been told that I need a mini that will fit in a P90 route- Do any of these offerings fit correctly? It's to replace these bad boys in this very Bad Ass Roger Giffin guitar- They are just too noisy for my high gain habit-

It's to replace these bad boys in this very Bad Ass Roger Giffin guitar- They are just too noisy for my high gain habit- The Gibson mini humbuckers will fit into a standard P90 route, but I think it takes some additional trickery to fasten them. I don't know which mini humbuckers are suited for high gain style though: I like 'em for chime and grit.-Jonathan
Bloozguy Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 If you use a conventional mini humbucker you need a setup like this: otherwise a P90 sized humbucker will look like this: or a "stacked" P90 like this:
atquinn Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 Nice Giffin! See this video series for help installing minihumbuckers into P90 routes. I've done it and it's pretty easy. Also, if you end up getting minihumbucker without the mounting rings, I have 2 cream ones I could send you. - Austin
analogsystem Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 Not to open a big 'ol can of crap for you....but you should check the size of your p-90s as Gibson (at least) changed the size of their mini humbuckers at some point in the 80s or 90s....Most of the new 90s / mini rings are a little larger than vintage ones. If you buy Duncan Antiquities they are the vintage size. There is also a mounting plate that screws into the wood of your guitar cavity that has threaded holes for p90s or mini humbuckers. They are the same size (minis in gibson deluxe rings that is) but have their mounting holes in different places

OMG. it would rule. just do it
