EvanD Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 Hey guys I am looking for jobs playing solo Jazz-Blues guitar at coffee shops or small restaurants. I am having some difficulties finding stuff to play. I have been learning stuff out of The Real Books but just comping all the time seems kind of borish. So I am looking for some suggestion to mix things up. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks Evand
tafkathundernotes Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 Keb' Mo' Great jazz-blues stuff - especially the fingerstyle stuff. Go here, then to the music tab. http://www.kebmo.com/ The album "Just Like You" has "Perpetual Blues Machine" on it - that's a great tune for the settings you're talking about. Good luck!
anotherfreak2 Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 Check out the Acoustic Guitar books, they have some great tunes. They are what I listen to when I'm looking for new material, or trying to get inspirationthis one:http://www.halleonard.com/item_detail.jsp?...coustic+guitar+I'll try to find better links, there are a few in this series that are great!
JoeD Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 Any advice for performing solo would also be helpful for the young lad.JoeD
hardheartedbill Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 the "just comping" part has me a bit puzzled, work out those heads and then stick em ontop of the chords, do one arrangement yourself and I swear you'll be hooked, Black Orphius is a good one to try from the Real Book
FunkyE9th Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 If you play fingerstuly jazz stuff, I would recommend any book by Howard Morgen. Go to Amazon.comIf you can find Howard Morgen's book of Gershwin songs that's a really good book. It comes with a CD. The CD by itself is worth the money. Here's a link to my not so good attempt of playing one of his arrangements...http://www.mp3lizard.com/download.cfm?id=6436Also check out guys like Martin Taylor and Tuck Andress. They have books and videos out.-FunkyE9th
Brooks Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 about the only thing i can do in that chord/meldoy solo style is "take the A train". one of many holes in my style (along w/ shred & chicken picken).
SteveB Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 All I can say is listen to alot of Joe Pass. If you REALLY want to impress people though, go buy one of these: and learn to play like Charlie Hunter.
alpep Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 evan shoot me an e mail I can send you some charts on a disk or stop over at stonge's he has the same ones and can burn you a copy
Tres Aardvarks Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 All I can say is listen to alot of Joe Pass. you beat me to it, you bastard.BTW, I was surprised to find that a local Italian place has a solo jazz guitarist providing the dinner music in Longmont here. Pretty good, though he was obviously playing restrained for the restaurant crowd.
