straightblues Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Found a used Dutone 3 holer at Guitar Center of all places. This is the first one I have every played. First impression, the guitar was very very light Much lighter than my hollow Newport. Are all Duotones this light? The neck was nice and chuncky, not huge, but big. Do most of these have bigger neck profiles? The guitar had old strings and they felt like 9's. In spite of all this, it played nicely and got good tone. The pickups, which appear to be the originals, (double black bridge and zebra neck) weren't very balanced. I suspect that could be just pickup hieght adjustment issue since the bridge seemed awfully low. What are the original pickups? It had two small switches which I couldn't really figure out with all of the noise at Guitar Center. Can someone please tell me how the two switches work? What if anything do I need to know about the piezios? Being Guitar Center, they had a price of $1,100. I told them I thought it was worth about $700 they said the could probably do a deal at that price range. What is a good price for a Duotone that is in 9/10 condition with a Hamer case? I saw the last one list here sold for $675. It is a natural top if that makes any difference. Thanks for all of your help!!!!
Jeff R Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Great guitar but your source has it overpriced. Use that one to test-drive your interest in one, then shop around.Duotones IMHO kick ass. The gigging guy's guitar equivalent of a Swiss Army knife.

Jeff R Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 they said the could probably do a deal at that price range.Guitar Center's typical idea of a deal in the $700 price range is actually $970 with a fucking Monster Cable thrown in as a courtesy. If they honor their claim, great, hit the bastard, but I'd still shop around.
serial Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 GC is notorious for selling the case as a separate item. If it was $700 out the door (excluding tax) WITH case, that's a decent deal. Duotones are great all-around guitars indeed. The switches are one for the pickups (normal function for magnetic p/us) and the little one changes between piezo/both/mag pickups.

First impression, the guitar was very very light Much lighter than my hollow Newport. Are all Duotones this light? >Most duos are light due to the chambering and thin sprice top.The neck was nice and chuncky, not huge, but big. Do most of these have bigger neck profiles?> Neck profiles for duos like most hamers are all over the map. Mine is on the thinner side (1996)The guitar had old strings and they felt like 9's. In spite of all this, it played nicely and got good tone. >your preference, I have 10's on mineThe pickups, which appear to be the originals, (double black bridge and zebra neck) weren't very balanced. Neck/both/bridge.>Little switch = mags/both/piezoWhat if anything do I need to know about the piezios?> They are cool.Being Guitar Center, they had a price of $1,100. iownit4 Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 I love mine Too.. It's light the neck is a med.. not too chuncky ..I got mine off ebay for 620.00 score!!!
Brooks Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 duotones are may favorites. obviously the acoustic tones are cool and useful, but i love the electric tones. the semihollow spruce top & wooden bridge give the neck pup a jazzy tone, yet throw some gain on the bridge pup and rawk owt! that was my goldtop that just sold for $675 w/ hsc (it had plenty of dings). neeeded $$ for my newport. i still have a thin necked blonde w/ phatcats, and a chunky necked import (a gig spare, more for my buddies martin, which seems to go down every other gig). the import doesn't sound as bright (w/ acoustic output) as my blonde, but neither did my usa goldtop.
straightblues Posted August 16, 2005 Author Posted August 16, 2005 Thanks Brooks, the guitar I am looking at is like the middle one only it has the original pickups. How does your Duotone and Newport fit together? Do they cover the same ground or different ground? I have a Newport with Phat Cats also and am afraid that they will sound too much alike.
tafkathundernotes Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Not to hijack, but are the Korean ones any good?
Brooks Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 my newport and duotone both have phatcats, so they cover similar ground. the duotone is less prone to feedback w/ high gain, the newport has a rounder tone.leave humbuckers in your duotone if you want more tonal variation, but i love me them phatcats.my import duotone is an amazing guitar for $226 shipped, but i will eventually put some better mag pups in. i bought it for a gig spare, so i don't play it much
