Thanks......In most cases the color coat is sprayed very thin over sealed wood and then gets a series of clear finish.1.There are differing opinions on finish thickness and sound/tone. As a general rule thinner is better but I have played guitars that sound great that have what would be considered a thick finish. I have also heard the opposite.2.Depends on the type of finish.3.Several4.Yes but not the only. Nitro can yellow and crack with age. some people like that, others don't.5.Hamer stopped using nitro.1991-1992 ish.6.Take it off and replace with chrome.

Disturber Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 There is a lot of hokus pokus involved in this. My SSII has a custom finish by Jim O Connor. It look like it is thicker than an ordinary Hamer coat, but the guitar sounds awesome and sustain for days. It has a great, great tone even with a Floyd. Don't belive everything you read or hear, if it looks good then it's cool.

cmatthes Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Two of my best sounding and playing guitars have (relatively) thick metalflake finishes. I'd stack either of them against a bunch of TGP "Holy Grail" guitars anyday.
