Need help with chugging in Creep!!

Hey there, this may sound stupid but we are learning Creep and our lead player is having trouble changing over from the intro chords to that distorted CHK CHK part so I need to start distorted stuff in the chorus and the main focus, of course, are those 2 chugging bits.

Being a singer and technically challenged, I'm not having any success getting that sound. Think I've got a good thick tone but can't for the life of me get the chunky CHK CHK sound. We can't play that song without it!!!

Any helpful tips would be appreciated.

Just use distortion, with quite a bit of treble, and hit the low strings hard near the bridge. Should get you in the ballpark. Just use a quick down and then upstroke, that's what gives the "chuga" the down is the "chug" sound, and when you hit it on the upstroke, you're getting the "a" chug(down) a (up)

Hope this makes sense!

it would help to know what kind of amp is being used and what the settings are. will make a HUGE difference even for something as simple as a chnk chnk sound. isnt gonna happen with a bandit 1/ 10 if you know what im sayin

Yeah, I think if you have your distorted sound set up really loud, all ya do is kind of loosely hold that chord so you're kind of muting it with your left hand and chunk the bottom few strings hard by the bridge. Fun song to sing if you do it in Emaj, but that bridge has some hard notes to hit if you play it in a higher key, which I think they do.

Thanks guys I'll give the suggestions a try - I usually play up by the neck pickup so that may be some of my problem. Also like the "have your distorted sound set up really loud " suggestion - I've been trying at home to get ready for practice and that may be part of it too.

FYI - using a Standard w/ JB through a Savage Macht12 - not high gain amp but put out plenty of oomph when it wants to. Amp I've got setup at practice is a H&K tube 50.

Don't have a Big Muff, but am using 5:00 Fuzz which definitely gets me in that ballpark.

Yes, it's a very cool song to sing - we're playing it in the original key (whatever that is, like I said... technically challenged  ) and that's fine as long as we have the right tempo but if the tempo slows down those "RUN"'s hang on FOREVER!!!

It's Johnny Greenwood literally pummeling the strings. I don't know if any of you are Radiohead fans, but Johnny hits the guitar harder than anybody around. He wears an arm brace due to a repetitive strain injury he occurred from years of his violent right hand attack technique.

He actually uses a Marshall Shredmaster pedal into a Fender Eighty Five amp.

The sounds consist of a left hand that has slightly muted the strings and the right hand hitting the first three strings for a downrake and then an uprake. The downrake is allowed to sustain for several milliseconds and the uprake is choked for no sustain.

The sound is a Chu-Chuck. The (ck) of the Chuck is the choke.

You'll want to hit the strings so hard and percussively that the natural harmonics are released during the raking too, it's a complex sound that if you pull it off, will go over really well whenever you play it in the song.

That song is so much better when you say "you're so fucking special" instead of "you're so very special"

AGREED!! I plan on doing the Morrison on Ed Sullivan thing if someone says we shouldn't sing it that way at certain gigs...
