svl Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Okay, the 12 string Proto has me on a new hunt. From what I can gather, a custom double neck (12 & 6) Phantom was made for Steve Clark. Were any others ever produced? Any double neck Prototypes?Am I on a snipe hunt, or does anything like this exist (that I have any chance of procuring)? I know about the double Cali geets, but I'm pretty much a strictly 70s/ early 80s guy.Thinking this might have to be a custom order, hoping not. Thanks in advance for any guidance and/or help.
mc2 Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 There were three bass/guitar Phantoms/Cruises (4 & 6) made early to mid-80s....Would be interesting to see it if it exists. I would think there would at least be a still shot of it in old Def Lep photos if such a cool thing existed.Apparently, early Hamer doublemecks are hard to find info on sometimes> Two that I've had there was no factory log info on. I've been told the early doublenecks were built outside the factory at various builders basements/shops so record keeping was spotty.****...Found this with description by Jol: (Site also has shots of Steve's other Hamers...4-digit Standard, Special, 3 PUP FBhttp://www.steveclarkguitar.com/Hamer-Guitars.htmlHE PHANTOM DOUBLENECK MODEL:This 18-string double-neck Hamer guitar is a one-of-a-kind custom model. I've never seen Steve pictured with this guitar live anywhere and so I assume that this was a guitar that he used in the studio only as pictured here at Wisseloord Studios in Amsterdam. This photo would've been taken during the Hysteria studio sessions and this guitar perhaps gave Steve a specific type of sound for certain pieces of music. There's not any information out there on one-of-a-kind models so again the information I have on this guitar comes from Jol Dantzig. He says: "That's a Phantom model doubleneck. It would have been a custo order, and normally has two pick-ups per neck. This guitar looks identical to one that was shown at a trade show except two of the pick-ups are missing - possibly the same one, covered up by a new pickguard. The controls are laid out for four pick-ups: Volume, Volume, Tone and 3-way selector for each pair. The third switch up higher and visible in the second photo (see below), although slightly blurred is for selecting one neck or the other."STEVE LIVE ON HYSTERIA TOUR CIRCA 1988 WITH HAMER FB CUSTOM SPEC. MODELSTEVE WITH ONE-OF-A-KIND CUSTOM MODEL HAMER DOUBLENECK IN STUDIO, AMSTERDAMAbout Steve and his band, Jol Dantzig said:"Steve was a very humble and nice guy, a joy to work with - as are the other guys in the band. I ran into them first when they were playing Chicago's Aragon Ballroom as an opening act. They were keen to get some guitars so we started up a relationship. Whenever I went backstage to see them on tour, I was greeted like family. The entire band did a tour of our shop in Arlington Heights and it was a great boost for everyone, band and employees."WITH SPECIAL THANKS TO JOL DANTZIG FOR HIS INFORMATION AND TIME. mc2 Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Here's one of the bass & 6 string versions. The other two were a red & black zulu finish and a natural one.
Jason01 Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 What was that crazy yellow double neck that someone posted not long ago in a pawn shop or something? I think it was a double neck bass now that I think about it.
HamStd Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 SVL, is this what you are asking about? This was a NAMM show guitar. I have one in black as well. email me if you are interested, I might have a few others that are a variation on the theme. I also have this one which isn't exactly a 70-80's but in ways it sort of copies a pretty popular model... enjoy!! Peter Hamstd@gmail.com P.S. that doubleneck bass was a scepter with a fretless 5 and a 4 string neck in white/black tuxedo finish.
