Fender finish repair

backinit

Question

Posted

I picked up an inexpensive MIM strat to do some modifications on and it's in very nice shape sans for a nasty chip o finish missing at the neck joint and an attached finish crack. I know I can probably stop the crack by drilling through the start/end of the crack, but what is compatible to this finish? I was hoping I could feather sand the finish around the chip and use some black auto paint and blend it as best as I can. Any ideas?

You should stay away from a poly repair... you can make a quite invisible repair using nitrocellulose paint markers and a can of clearcoat.

You could do it all with a can of gloss black using tape, but you'll still have to feather it out.

Nitro blends into poly quite well but that area is vulnerable and could very well crack and break off again, although in nitro's defense, it doesn't chip off like poly does.

ReRanch pens are better than the catalyzed lacquer pens from Stew Mac, the Stew Mac is sturdier stuff that dries faster but doesn't blend nearly as well as the ReRanch pens.

The most important thing to do before you start is clean the poop out of that area and get ALL of the oils and stuff you can't see with the naked eye so your new repair will get maximum adherence.

ReRanch pens contain the same lacquer as their spray cans do so blending between the two will be effortless.

Hell, having a black nitro pen and a can of gloss black lacquer around the house isn't a bad idea.

After seeing how horrible the finish was on a Firebird X at my local Guitarget I think whoever was in charge of QC the day it shipped was using a lot of imagination too.
