Mindseyes Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Is it safe to use naphtha on nitro finished guitars? Is it good to use to clean up guitars like getting wax build up off and cleaning gunk off of fret boards? Is there something else that I should be looking at?Thanks!!
tobereeno Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 I think so? I think I read that in a Stew-Mac manual, but ask Murkat - he's got a big spray bottle of naphtha on his workbench so he surely knows where to spray it, and where not to! I wouldn't recommend this, but the last major de-gunking I did, I wrapped the bottom of the neck in a towel, then went at it with a scrubbing pad and dishwashing soap. I then quickly dried it and oiled the hell out of it. It worked, but the neck got seriously pissed off at me anyways and took about a week to settle back down

Naptha is the perfect solvent for nitro. Thanks J!!!So it would be safe on the bare wood on the fret board also?
murkat Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 it is what I use in the shop, all guitars, my guitars. all very happy clients.
Hamer Dave Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 I second Murkat's response. Naptha is widely suggested. A big reason is it's ability to evaporate quickly. And oiling the board afterward is wise.I saw a guy on youtube just yesterday spraying on Simple Green Max to clean a fingerboard. Any thoughts on the product, anyone?
crunchee Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 Is there a brand or type of Naptha that is best for cleaning guitars? I've seen it commonly available as 'white gas' (lantern fuel) and lighter fluid, but I don't know which is best to use on guitars...if indeed, this this is the best type of Naptha. Thanks in advance!
murkat Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 simple green is water base. I do not advise.I buy naptha by the gallons at Home depot.Yes, lighter fluid is naptha.
zenmindbeginner Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 Home Depot and Lowes each carry only one brand of Naptha... Klean Strip is the brand that I can get here in NCV M&P Naptha is what the can says. It's good for cleaning all sorts of stuffNot as fun to inhale as lighter fluid though for some odd reson... it must be that nifty spout that smells so good.
Armitage Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Unless you're running a shop, you can get it in little tiny cans.
