MarkF786 Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Hey guys,What do you think of the 24 fret Gibson Les Paul Double Cutaways that were made in the late 90s? They remind of a Hamer Studio, though with 24 frets. It's nice having the extra frets, but it also pushes the neck pickup back from the sweet spot.Mark
bubs_42 Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 My personal experience with the Gibson DC was the damn thing was too chambered. Everyone of them howled when I would play them. They felt nice, a little neck heavy but I didn't find them to be anything special. Just my 2cents.
GC Ron Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 The top two frets are usless. Neck pickup is too bright for me. Bad design. Get a Studio instead.
cmatthes Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Agree with Ron - poor design all around. I'm a Gibson fan, but that one misses the mark completely.Try one out and you'll see...
serial Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Agreed-one of the worst Gibsons I've ever played and I primarily gig Gibsons.
veatch Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I won't argue with the brothers on this one. Mostly because they're correct.
MarkF786 Posted February 18, 2013 Author Posted February 18, 2013 It's funny that the consensus is negative cause a friend was raving to me how much he loved this model - he owns several of them - and he's a very experienced and knowledgable player. Apparently these guitars are heavily chambered, which I would like, but in my limited experience, a 24 fret guitar doesn't sound as good as the 22 fret equivalent because of the neck pickup placement. I see that Gibson also made some 22 fret double-cut models, but I don't know if they were chambered or not.
LucSulla Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 The other guitarist in my first band had one, and I just didn't dig it. It didn't feel right, and it didn't even come close to sounding like a real LP (which I had). They are all chambered to my knowledge with the possible exception of a special run Gibby did for Guitar Center back in 2007 I believe. I've seen a few people say they were solid, but I can't confirm. You can tell them from the newer ones because they had three control knobs instead of two like you usually see and have a plain top. If it is actually solid, I would imagine it sounds somewhat different than my friend's. Here is an example:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gibson-Les-Paul-DC-Ebony-/281066440251?pt=Guitar&hash=item4170dd863b
Hackubus Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I can't add anything good here either. Had a beautiful '98 model I bought new in the red finish with the super flamey top. Other than that, it was just a stinker. Neck heavy, didn't have a real personality one way or the other. (didn't sound good, didn't sound awful). Gibson's failed take on a Hamer Special/PRS.
MarkF786 Posted February 18, 2013 Author Posted February 18, 2013 Thank for all the feedback. I'm walking away from the guitar my friend was recommending. But instead I found an AMAZING Hamer last night. I'll post pictures later this afternoon.
