bobbymack Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 At long last it is time to part with my beloved '96 Artist Custom. This guitar looks and plays great, and without a doubt stays in tune better than any guitar I have ever owned, period. Th pics above were taken when I bought it NOS in around '98, I'll snap a couple current ones as soon as I can. This guitar has definitely been played, quite a bit in fact, but is still in overall EXC+ condition with the exception of some fret wear in the cowboy chord area. It still plays and sounds great, but will need a fret dress and maybe even a fret job some day not too far down the line. The guitar does have the reversible "bobbymack" mod: a duotone type setup with a Baggs T Bridge (passive piezo, ~$150) installed. The neck and bridge humbucker outputs are summed onto vol knob 1, and the piezo output signal is on the middle knob, easily blendable. The jack has been replaced with a stereo one to accomodate the stereo Y cord (included) which runs into your regular pedalboard and a DI box for sending to an acoustic amp or the PA... This mod works great for an acoustic / electric doubled guitar sound, a number of HFCers have bought guitars from me with this mod. The only things that aren't reversible are the stereo jack (which doesn't matter -- if you want to just run a mono signal use a regular mono cord and there will be no piezo output), and a tiny slot cut out of the bridge pickup cover to accomodate the piezo wires from the bridge and avoid drilling a hole into the top of the guitar. If you want the guitar as is, I'll include a Baggs Parametric DI box, the original bridge, and a stereo Y cord. Or, I'll return the bridge and wiring to stock (very simple) for the same price....$900 shipped in lower 48 I'll be out all day today, will reply tonight. This is a great guitar, I mean it.

Yeah, the mixture may have been a little rich when I priced that one, . Actually I'm just taking into account the fretwear thing. A great guitar though... Thanks guys, it'll probably be gone tomorrow and I'll likely regret it one day...
Jack C Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Sell it to Brooks and keep the guitar in state.
bobbymack Posted November 3, 2005 Author Posted November 3, 2005 Brooks is gonna check it out on Saturday... Here's a pic from today...
geoff_hartwell Posted November 5, 2005 Posted November 5, 2005 Does the Baggs mod require a 9v? Is it cool to run straight out like the duotones? I love my duotones and would love to have my others be as flexible!GH

I love my duotones and would love to have my others be as flexible!GH just got back w/ the artist. bobby's real cool, and the guitar is sweet, both as expected.the piezo pup is passive, no 9v.edit:the pup goes into a l.r. baggs preamp box, which is active.
Guest pirateflynn Posted November 5, 2005 Posted November 5, 2005 Congrats Brooks..........love my Artist Custom.
bobbymack Posted November 6, 2005 Author Posted November 6, 2005 Yeah man, another smooth roadside deal, this time it was the Arby's at Exit 75.... Brooks (and Dave, of Brooks & Dave ) were very cool to deal with, and he made off with one of best guitars I've ever owned. The man has also committed to first return dibs for me should he ever decide to move it on up the line...that is something I am glad of, as I'm sure there will future swearing from me re: "Why the f#@K did I ever sell that AC?", etc... Enjoy the guitar dude, and it was good to meet you! PS Geoff, you can install the T Bridge either active or passive, I go the passive route so the guitar can be easily returned to stock if desired. This just means for the best sound you should run the piezo end of the Y cable into a direct box on your pedalboard prior to going to your acoustic amp / PA etc...
geoff_hartwell Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 Thanks!Would you say it compares favorably with Duotones?CHeers,GH
Brooks Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 i'll have to string it w/ acoustic strings and do a side by side comparison, which is gonna happen prolly next week. busted out the camera yesterday morning, ta-daaa
Guest galejt Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 If I may be so bold as to suggest a new logo...
Brooks Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 i'll have to string it w/ acoustic strings and do a side by side comparison, which is gonna happen prolly next week. ok, strung bobbymacks AC and my duotone up w/ new acoustic strings last night for a side by side comparison of amplified acoustic tones. no contest, the duotone has a much fuller more realistic acoustic tone, while the AC w/ the LL Baggs bridge sounded thinner and more brittle (due to the metal bridge and maple top). for me, this outcome was as expected, as the duotone was designed for this kinda thing.the LL Baggs mod bobbymack did to the AC is cool, and would come in handy if you have an acoustic part or 2 in an otherwise all electric set. but, if you're doing primarily acoustic based stuff w/ occassional electric solos (like i'm doing), the duotone is the ticket.bobbys AC is one of the most resonant and chimey guitars i've ever owned, and has classic rawk humbucker tone for days! it is so sexy looking, too. its a keeper, thanx bobby!! great to meet and deal w/ another cool NC HFC'er.

Yep, that doesn't surprise me either though I've never really checked out a Duotone. I bought one once which had a cracked headstock when it arrived so it was flipped to BCRGreg for repairs and a resell... I used my AC for exactly what you described -- an occasional acoustic type tone blended into an electric set, and it worked fine for that. I can see if you're playing in an acoustic duo it may not be the ultimate solution. So, if it turns out she isn't getting played, gimme a call dude. I'll gladly take her back.
