With looks that kill Stevens made a huge impression during the '80s as the guitar playing foil to former British punk rocker Billy Idol, crafting a style that would grant him leave of absence to form the Atomic Playboys.'Discovered' bY Montrose and Van Halen producer Ted Templeman, and signed to Warner Brothers Records, Billy Idol guitarist Steve Stevens recorded his debut album over a two year period. Disturber Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 That was a damn irritating singer. Perhaps his technical abilities were good, but he just sounded like the worst of the anonymous hair metal singers out there. Why does guitarists who does not sing themselves always theme up with shite singers. Slash does it all the time too, on his albums. Guess they don't want front men with great personalities. It will steal to much of their own thunder. Unfortunately it delutes the sauce so much it becomes totally un interesting in the end.Didn't he do this album in his worst cocaine/drug period too? It kinda sounds like it. I have this album in a box somewhere. I never play it, and I don't miss it. If you want a great Steve Stevens solo album just buy Flamenco A Go Go and be done with it.
HAMERMAN Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 No argument that "Flamenco A Go Go" is a great album but I also liked the Atomic Playboys album quite a bit and always considered it a band album more than a solo album. For me they are for different moods.Being a huge fan of Hanoi Rocks and liking Michael Monroe's voice I expected to love the Jerusalem Slim album but did not. On a related note I had a chance to catch a Hanoi Rocks show back in the day but declined as it was finals week and I had a lot of studying to do. I figured I would catch them next time around as is seemed inevitable to me that they would continue to gain popularity. A week later Razzle died in a car crash (with Vince Neil)! :-( BTW: I was lucky enough to see Atomic Playboys when they toured for the album and they rawked!

Just guessing, but I'd think the opposite... They pick guys with great personalities over great frontmen who are intolerable. . Steve Vai had an interview or two where he says he'd rather hire someone great that he really gets along with than someone unbelievable that he can't deal with on a tour.
Tres Aardvarks Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I owned that CD, and I couldn't get past the singer. I've always had issues that way.
RichF Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I saw the Atomic Playboys tour too at the Paradise in Boston. If you guys think the singer's voice is bad his stage presence was even worse. You could see the wheels turning as he thought out his stage moves. "OK raise your arm in the air now and bang your head a little." Then a second delay as he slowly raised his hand in the air and then bobbed his head a little.Steve Stevens was everything you'd expect. Great playing and great stage presence.
