EDITED 24 November 2013 - Got the P Pickup working after a thorough Logic and Sets workout!

EDITED 19 November 2013

Needed: a 1st Gen Cruisebass Truss Rod Cover (the cool inscribed one would be great, see Andrew's post, below)

Needed: a 1st Gen Cruisebass DiMarzio P Bass Pickup

Would like to buy if you have any or all one.

Would also consider a trade... surely I've got something of value in the parts box.

Does it need to say "Cruisebass"? Otherwise, I think those are standard TRC's like you'd find on a LP?

Knobs will be tough I think. Unless you are willing to pay......

Posted

Thought I would at least try to get the cool "Cruisebass" script TRC. If I can't find one I'll go for the standard bell cover.

Yep, the knobs I'm afraid are going to be stupid expensive - UNLESS the eBay listings are just from people, unrelated to the HFC or Hamerphiles (sp?), trying to see if the 'noodles will stick to the wall' and have no real clue of the true value. I'd trust an HFCer to provide me with a realistic value before I'd trust eBay.

I assume they looked like this:

$(KGrHqR,!roFG6iw+wT4BRw3RLwi!Q~~60_1.JP

Completed listings show two sold for $50 each last month(!) - nowhere near what I'd be willing to spend. There are two on eBay right now for $40 each, again, way out of my league. If this were some pristine closet queen, maybe, but then again, some pristine closet queen would likely still have the original knobs.

I'm wondering if maybe Mouser might have something close... might search this weekend.

What year is the Cruise? It may have had different stock knobs you know......

Didn't the very early ones have black top-hats?

Posted

1982 - I have no idea what was stock.

You could very well be correct and all of this knob business nonsense. I just assumed they all had the knobs like I pictured.

ETA: this photo of Sting's '82 has the bell knobs. Interesting!

Could these be bell knobs? Hard to tell:

The bass bell-cover is larger than the guitar, scale photo above. A good engraver could do a reasonable job of copying the script logo onto a generic cover.

Correct two-ply material is available from Chandler and they are quite easy to carve by hand if you can't get a generic one that fits.

Knobs on 81- early 83 are standard top hat knobs, the black Hamer ones only being used from mid-83 until the end of 87.

Thanks! I appreciate Chris bringing it up and Andrew confirming. To summarize, I don't have a clue and it appears all I need is a truss rod cover!

I've edited the thread title to correct my mistake.

Thanks again!

I just sold a Cruisebass-inscribed cover a month or so ago along with a plain one for a Cruise/Blitz bass. Not sure, but I think the buyer (a member here) might have only needed one but he got both. I'd been holding on to them for anither HFCer who said he wanted them 2 years ago...

For some reason, they're like Cali/SS term backplates...

Bump and Edited to Add the P Bass Pickup.

Would like to see if I can get one of the old DiMarzios before I resort to something else.

Bump to remove the P Bass pickup.

Still looking for the elusive truss rod cover. :)

I think the big plastic knobs didn't start on Cruisebasses until sometime in 1983. Bell knobs before that.

Also....I think the bridges didn't have "HAMER" inscribed on them until around the same time.

I'm going by ones I've owned and another dozen or so that I have photos of.

Also....some of the early Cruisebasses also used Gibson bell truss covers with three screws, not the thinner two screw TRCs.

Can anyone else confirm or have conflicting info?

Posted

If someone could trace theirs maybe you can get a group to order some from that parts guy that makes all the hard to find truss rod covers. Can't remember the name but there have been multiple threads on here about him. I think I need one for my Watson. Stupid cut in half covers. :(

Yeah, I think we confirmed the knobs to be original (or at least as-original). I would delete and clean up the thread (more than striking through the comments that I've done) but I'd never try to cover up my own ample ignorance - and someone might come along one of these days and learn something as I did. The TRC on this one has two screws:

I'm thinking if I don't get a bite by the first of next year I might take the photo from Andrew's site and see if Frets On The Net would be able to fabricate one for me. His site seems to indicate he's slowing down a good bit, so I may need to locate other alternatives. If FOTN can, I think I'll have several made as the black hole these get sucked into doesn't seem to be anywhere near full. Where could they all have gone?

I suppose never having been a real life touring musician I can't begin to understand how a TRC can go missing, but man, there really seem to be a lot of these missing...

Bump - truss rod cover? Anyone?

l-hest-bump.jpg

While I'm on it, how hard / expensive would it be to get a period-correct hard shell case for this thing?

Posted

No affiliation.

If it is a B12A case then it is a few years younger than a 1st gen but I would think still functional and a Hamer case but I could be wrong.

Thanks. That looks HUGE! Think the snow comes with, just in time for Christmas? :)

I should have been more clear: I actually have an SKB case that does a fine job of protecting the bass. If I run up on a period-correct Hamer case it might be nice to have. I think the case that goes with this has a red interior.

The main thing though is the truss rod cover. It just looks incomplete without one.

You might have to buy another 1st gen to get the period correct case and trc. ;)

You can also make your own trc using stuff from stewmac. If you want something done right . . .

I sold a script-labelled 'Cruisebass' trc and a plain bass trc a couple months back if the HFCer I sold them to is looking to sell one-either are compatible and from 82/83 Hamer basses.

Posted

Thanks. At this point a plain cover sounds fine to me.

A script-labelled one will turn up some day.

I was digging through a bunch of my parts stash today for a project...guess what I found? It looks the same as the photo Andrew posted above. Velorush, please PM me with your address if you still need it, and I'll pop it in the post next week. :)
