bmenary Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Does this guitar look refinished? The top- has that dark edge to it- never seen that?to me looks like someone not very experienced with staining a sunburst top did this and lots of bleeding into the binding on the back? that can happen with time but it just does not look right to me?? I would say it's been refinished...? Look at pics on page 2 of this thread. Personally, I would stay away from this one unless it could be inspected or the seller agrees to a return.Comments?
Andrew Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 It's un-bursted (faded) - that's why the edges of the front look emphasised. As for the binding - not the neatest hand finishing Hamer has ever done but it looks like a few I have seen where the coloured paint line does not quite line up with the wood-binding margin. It's part of the vintage, 'real humans made this guitar' look.

If anything I think the exact opposite and again Andrew sums it up nicely; "It's part of the vintage, made by humans look."The asking price and the reasoning behind it is as sound as any. The actual sell price (if it sells) is probably somewhere in the lines of what has been posted here. If I was in the market I personally would not be afraid of this 4 digit based on description and or the sellers reputation. GLWTS.Hamerica
cmatthes Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Looks 100% original and NOT refinished to me.Hamer didn't stain their tops - they sprayed them. That's just a faded burst, and I've seen at least 5-6 other old and 100% original Standards with very similar bursts. The dark edge is very typical, as that's where the additional spray coats are, so they fade at a slower rate than the thinner color layers that are closer to the center. The red binding bleed is also something I've seen on other older Hamers, to varying degrees.I am not concerned that this is a refin at all.
