Impressions of the Marshall 1W 50th Anniversary models?

Starting to see used heads/combos of these come up fairly regularly around the $550 mark and am wondering if they'd make a good practice or recording platform. Anyone try 'em out and if so, what were your impressions?

I can do a pretty convincing dumbass, but a 1 watt Marshall not so much.

I played a JMP-1 at GC and thought it sounded great. I'd love to crank one through a 2x12 with a Badcat Unleash as a clean reamp. Instantly giggable then. I just don't know if it would have the thump that bigger glass like El34s, KT66s, and 6L6s have.

Hmmm....interesting. Makes ya wonder how they'd sound through a 4X12 though. And yeah, hear you on the glass thing - I suspect you'd need the bigger bottles to get the appropriate Marshall roar.

I long had a Bumbox, who really invented this idea of a 1 watt Marshall. It, haven't tried the Marshall, sounded great. It was loud enough to jam with a quieter drummer, but too loud for the baby to sleep through. Basically think of it as being 25% as loud as a 100 watt amp.

You just gotta sit there and look like you have a small, square head until someone turns you on, plugs you in and then you scream - shouldn't be that difficult... :D

had the jpm-1... sounded killer on the soundclips on youtube, but the guy (chris george) I think had

it cranked to the max. for me I would have needed to crank it too loud (condo dweller) to make it sing.

haven't tried the JCM-1 (modeled after the jcm-800) but might have been a better fit, people seem

to be running these into other speakers as they come with a 10" speaker so you might want to give

the head some thought.

BTW: there is a mega thread on the gear page on these. (search back a bit)

I'd bet that little JTM-1 head with a Beano Boost in front of it would sound tits.

Screw it - I'll just take whatever money I was going to spend on this little toy and put it toward a real Marshall! '70 smallbox 50W JMP outta do it... :)

The feature I like is that it goes down to line level so you can could go straight into headphones and not disturb neighbors or significant others if you need to rock out at 4 am. Or go straight into a board for live use or recording. Haven't tried myself yet as I haven't decided on an amp yet, but it might be a Marshall.

I prolly won't have need for the 50W JMP now that I rarely play out, but it'll be fun to try one again. Last time I played through one was a 100W SL half-stack my buddies and I rented one weekend for a big garage jam back in the '70's when my folks were away. We lived in the country, but our neighbours 1/4 mile down the road sure let the folks know after they got back!! :o:lol:

You guys might check out some of the Reeves amps with power scaling. They have quite a few 'flavors' and can get as loud or soft as you like.

I've had a Custom 12PS for around five or so years and it's not going anywhere - just the perfect amount of gain for me.

For those looking for more gain there's the extremely aggressive Custom 10HG, or for more 'Marshall-y,' the Custom 18. They make larger amps, too, if you need 50 or 100 watts - and power scaling is good about taming them when you don't need to bother the neighbors a quarter-mile away.

...'70 JMP small box 50W. Might've been owned by Pete Spearing, guitarist from early 70's Plymouth (GB)-based band Stonehouse. There are stencils on top and bottom of head cab bearing the name Stonehouse in white paint and the age of this head would fit in roughly with the band's history, which was pretty short-lived btw (released one hard-rock/progressive album circa 1971, bit of a cult classic in some parts of the globe). I've contacted Pete's representation to see if he verify this and provide any background on the amp if the story pans out.

Fairly clean shape, but like so many older Marshalls, not totally unmolested, unfortunately. Mains cord has been changed, some caps also but transformers look original. There were two holes drilled for an effects loop mod (under decals on back plate), but previous owner says it was totally reversed by the time he acquired it.

Seller's pics, not got my grubbies on it yet, so stay tuned... ;)
