Studio Custom Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 All Hamer LEDs are suppose to be powered by 3V right? I know the connector looks 9V so people mistakenly use one and burn out their bulbs, but someone was trying to convince me some were designed for 9V which is news to me.
chromium Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 Right- the LED uses a 2xAA battery pack (3V total) Technically, you could add a current limiting resistor to the ground leg of the LED and power it from the single 9V... but in absence of that resistor, you'd likely fry it.
RacerX Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 3 volts/2 AA for sure. There are a few different styles of double AA holders that have +&- outputs that look just like 9v which causes the confusion. The chasing LEDs might have different requirements... I never had one of those...yet ;-)

Good idea, though. I've used those to replace board-mounted batteries in a couple of old synth restorations for that same reason, and to ensure the batteries stay in place during transit: Not sure if RS stocks 'em, but you can find the 2xAA holders with snap clips at most of the online shops: http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Eagle-Plastic-Devices/12BH322B-GR/?qs=%2fha2pyFadujiFoBde4F0K2WTZTYUj5jO

Hey.....how come your electronics cavity is unpainted? Weird.
serial Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 I had some NOS Hamer battery clips around. Have to see if I still do-one got tucked into the case of an LED inlaid Hamer that I sold.
chromium Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Hey.....how come your electronics cavity is unpainted? Weird. Not sure... I just assumed that's the way they did it at the time(?), but these are the only early one's I've had. That pic is #0408. My old B8S #0534 is similar.
cynic Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Did they paint cavities in guitars with factory active electronics?
chromium Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Did they paint cavities in guitars with factory active electronics? Both the B4S ('90) and B4M ('04) that I got from Marcus were originally active (EMG-HBs and EXB) and have shielding paint. Pic of the B4S for reference (converted to passive): FWIW, though, I haven't had any noise issues with those early ones...
