Is this a genuine Gibson PAF base plate?

Disturber

Bought a set of pups for 100 bucks. They came out of a 1960 ES175. Former owner had bought the guitar and was conned to believe they were real paf's. Turns out one was an early 2002'ish Burstbucker 2. At least that is what I think, after measuring it and tried it out. It is pretty microphonic, squeals under high gain. Not potted and with a rough cast magnet.

The other pickup was a pretty old double black Dimarzio DP103, as far as I can tell. Probably early 80's. But someone has, put the two bobbins on a PAF base plate. The base plate has the tool marks and what, to me, looks like a legit Patent Applied For sticker.

What's the verdict from the forum experts? Is it a legit base plate?

Both pickups sound great btw. I tried them out in the Super Pro. The Burstbucker 2 is very paf:ish and drives the amp well. And that Dimarzio in the neck is pretty damn sweet. :)

Tough to tell. There are so many fake "PATENT APPLIED FOR" decals out there of varying quality, that that wouldn't be much help. There's a place in Germany that sells silkscreened decals with "age yellowed" carrier film that has been fooling experts for years.

Given all the other shenanigans surrounding this one, my guess is that it's as original to the guitar as the rest of the pickups, but there are plenty of people who know way more than I do about this stuff!

...and the very expert I had in mind just chimed in! ;)

need to check what's under the hood...

There is nothing under the hood. The plate is on a very old Dimarzio DP103. Someone made a Franken-paf. Just thought it would be kinda cool if the plate was actually legit. Not that it matter that much....

And if I might add, soooooo many great sounding pickups for a fraction of the price of a PAF - and likely more consistent, to boot!

This pickup is an old Dimarzio PAF DP103. Always loved how they sound. The old ones are pretty consistent. And the early 80's ones still can be found for very little mulla. They sound extremely good, and tone wise easily hold up to the expensive boutique brands for a fraction of the price.

Now, of course, that this one has a paf base plate is will sound even better, lolz (it's all in the mind). :D
