My daughter and her boyfriend are moving to Seattle in a couple weeks. they found an apartment in a neighborhood called Fremont. Of course Dad's concerned. Is this a safe and nice place to live for a relatively young couple? I know you guys wouldn't steer me wrong!

Thanks for any input

We are a bit too far away from Seattle to give much help. There are the usual places to get some insight, such as:

It seems to hold the reputation of being a smaller older "town" within a larger city. Some degree of gentrification, which

implies that it used to be undesirable and likely had safety issues. My impression is that there is a degree of artistic

quirkiness in the same sense as "Keep Portland Weird!" closer to us. (Portlandia?) As perhaps evidenced by "clothing optional"

activities.

It might be a bit more affordable than other parts of Seattle. And skew younger.

Good luck to them!

Fremont is really pretty cool, one of the few neighborhoods that has not become generic. Lots of old architecture, funky shops, great places to eat, lots to do within walking distance. For example, before LP sales took off, Fremont is where my stepson and I always headed to buy good used LPs; there are two shops across from each other. What else would you need to know?

It's a good pedestrian community. Django's right about the charming quirkiness. Wikitravel article

The Fremont district is great! Close to the city, but has it's own funky vibe. There's a fantastic Farmers/Flea market there every Sunday year-round. Not to worry, it's a very good part of the city.

Ha! Seattle is a really safe city, not counting home / car burglary and police brutality. Fremont is about as safe as it gets. It was an artist community in the 60s and during the day it is great - there is a wonderful co-op health food grocery store and the city's best record shop, Jive Time Records, in addition to a cool Sunday farmers market. At night Fremont really sucks as all the bars are "bro bars" or "meat market" club types. In short, its a fine place to live, great during the day, but very few cool bars at night. Not much live music (that I'd want to see) but it is very close to other districts which have good culture and nightlife.

Love Freemont! Very nice area to hang around in.

Hey, JohnnyB is it Ballard or Fremont that has a lot of Scandinavian immigrant heritage?

Ballard. The lawns look like they were trimmed with an X-Acto knife.

Ballard, plenty of gig / jams at the owl cafe' . Gigs at the firehouse, and Andy Marshall , THD, was right up stairs in the loft. Home of Red Hook brewery.
