AMAZING score on a Boogie Roaster Dual Rectifier Combo!!!

The Road King is actually listed as weighing LESS than the Roadster. Not sure how that works, considering the Road King has a much more complicated transformer set up.  being able to set each channel to use specific tubes, rectifier choice, specific speakers. Damn that's a lot to think about when setting it up. I don't think my ears are tuned enough to really hear that much of a difference between 2 6L6 2 EL34 and 4 6L6 2 EL34.

Definitely read the roadster manual cover to cover, as MB is usually very detailed about their intent and how the controls work. If they say it sounds best between 3 and 6, that probably is true.

Thanks for your opinion on this Tbone.

The Road King IS heavier. You might not be comparing them to the same variants such as combo vs combo, head vs head, etc.

WOW!!!!

If it's heavier than the Roadster, then how heavy is the Road King 2x12 combo?

120+ lbs. ?

Combo to combo is the comparison. The Roadster is closed back, the Road King is open back. I suspect the couple of pounds of extra weight are primarily the extra wood on the former. I am glad that my RK is the head version!

I'm assuming I could order just the head shell from Mesa.

I bet just the head shell would cost me more than what I paid for the amp though.

Or build your own head shell. ^_^ Easier than you think, and a helluva lot cheaper, even with "nice woods".

django, that's a really nice looking head shell you've got there.

Did yo build and stain that yourself?

If so, great job.

I do know a few guys that are really good cabinet makers.

I might contact them and see what it would cost.

Thanks django

If they have the existing cabinet, they should be able to easily determine what is needed in terms of size and mounting screws. Be sure to allow for adequate airflow so it does not overheat.

For mine, I used a piece of Jatoba (Brazilian Cherry) and a small piece of plexiglass. Cannot recall but that may have been a clear stain, though it does bring out the reddish hue nicely.

I was basing this on the combo versions. The website says the Roadster is 100lbs, while the RK II is 98 lbs. But I didn't realize that the RK is open back. Seems kinda strange, but I guess they didn't want it to weigh 110 lbs. The Roadster head is 48lbs, while the RKII is 57lbs.  Both are heavy for just being a head.

Yep. Those are both pretty heavy for being heads.

I guess they have to be with all that huge iron in them.

On the Friday before Christmas in 2000, I stopped at a pawn shop to look around and found a Mesa/Boogie DC-10 (Dual Calibre) tagged at $299. It had just been dropped off the night before and I was sure it wouldn't be there before the weekend was over. After determining that everything worked and it sounded great, I bought it on the spot. It was a great deal at the time, but $299 in 2000, adjusted for inflation would be $424.58 today, so ya beat me.

Congratulations!

That was a great deal.

I would have been all over that DC-10 for that price.

It was a typical pawn shop where gear with famous brand names (Gibson, Fender, Marshall) was overpriced, often ridiculously so. I saw that big-ass DC-10, and being a Mesa, I leaned down to look at the price tag simply to amuse myself. AFAIK it was a metal/shredder amp and I'd not be interested. But the tag said $299. Huh? I asked for a cord, plugged a crappy Epiphone into it and tried both channels, all EQ knobs, etc. to determine that everything worked. This thing had better tone than the Mesas that brag about their tone. At that point I bought it, threw it in the back seat and drove off.

I stopped at my local vintage guitar store and asked the BlueBook value on it--about $1K. I drove home, plugged my Phat Cat Newport into the clean channel, and it was a match made in heaven.

It's really amazing what stuff you can pick up if you just put in the time to look for them.

You'd be better off inquiring quotes from your friends. Boogie's headcabs are designed with the tubes/iron facing UP.

I've always wondered why some mesa boogie heads have the tubes up, while others have them down, the same is in the combos. The Mark Series and Lone Star series have always had the tubes down. Most of the rectifier series have heads with the tubes up.

Moreso to do with looks I think

Just give Mesa Boogie an email. They have great customer service, and would be able to quote you on a cabinet I bet

I think that's what I'm going to do.

Can't hurt just to get a quote.

I might not like the price, but it is what it is.

Actually, now that I think of it, I'm not so sure. That's because the chassis for the combo is mounted 180 degrees top to bottom compared to the head version

Oh well.

I might have to have one made then.

Thanks for all your input.
