velorush Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 IIRC, this has been discussed on the HFC several times and (again, IIRC) it seems to have links to Pete Comita. I seem to also recall maybe the original hardware was white? At any rate, the starting bid is (IMO) very nice for any '85 Cruise in this condition, especially with a case. http://www.ebay.com/itm/253136042658?ul_noapp=true
cmatthes Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Being sold by an HFC'er, and the story has been confirmed. Post CT Pete, yes, but he still owned it if that matters to a buyer. Otherwise, a likely great playing bass.
tomteriffic Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Didn't this originally have white/gold tuners?
polara Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Until I see a photo of Comita playing it (MC2 thought he had one) I'm just saying it's a nice Cruise. I never play it, so if I am gonna have a bass that sits unplayed it'll be my fretless Veillette-Citron that Joe and Harvey managed to rebuild for me ten years ago. If anyone has any questions about the flowery Cruise, PM me. It's a little beat but plays great. I got it from an HFCer a few years back and he did say he sold off the white-and-gold hardware because it was so fragile: the white enamel chips away and shows dirt. The black hardware is perfect and all Hamer-branded Schaller so it's period-correct and brand-correct.
cmatthes Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 I can't recall exactly where I had found out about that bass and the Pete Comita connection, but it was before I ever saw it for sale on eBay ages ago. I seem to recall something from an old '90s-era interview or something, but a lot of dust has settled over the last 20 years! I just remember that I had read or seen a description of the white Cruisebass with painted flowers on it long before I actually saw a pic of it.
mc2 Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Yes, it had white/gold hardware but, IMO, looks waaaay better with the black. It looked really "girly" with the flowers and white/gold before. The flowwery paintjob was aftermarket but done by the guy who did custom work for Prince's band members, if I recall. Don't remember his name at the moment. And yes, somewhere I have a pic of Comita playing the bass...but damned if I can find it. It's on an old PC I think that is used as a doorstop. I still say that bass would be great for a Flying Burrito Brothers tribute band. It looks like the Nudie suits on the first album cover. Hey, Polara.....can you post a pic of your fretless V-C? I'm into V-C basses. Have had a half dozen of them...4- and 8-strngs.

Agreed and was actually going to put that in my original post (but of course, got distracted and forgot) - the black hardware is perfect.
Jfritts Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 If I bought this my wife would crap, especially if I displayed it next to the pink Scepter 12 that MC2 sold me. Too much bling!

mc2 Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 The "Cruisin' Comita Cousins" would be better alliteration. 😀

polara Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 Relisted due to a "I'm kind of short on money, can I pay you after the 25th?" buyer. People!
cmatthes Posted September 16, 2017 Posted September 16, 2017 But the auction ended BEFORE you got paid on the 25th, right? And you knew that when you bid, correct good sir?!
