New HI FI speaker Audition With great customer service twist

I was interested in auditioning some new speakers, particularly Golden Ear. I located a dealer and spoke to him to arrange an audition. During the course of the conversation he asked me what I currently have. My current speakers are Definitive Technology BP 10's They are 25+ years old. The s. tore owner mentioned that Golden Ear speakers were designed by the same guy as Definitive and Polk before that. He also mentioned that Definitive had a problem with the glue they used on some of their speakers causing separation of the cone and the surround. He asked if I had had my drivers replaced.

I told him they seem to sound ok and I had not.  He told me I should look and bring the serial #'s of my speakers when I came to the store.

So I went to the store and auditioned the Golden Ear Triton 1's which were really awesome but more coin than I was willing to invest. he did not have the Triton 3's in stock which were more in my price range. While we were listening he asked about my Definitives. I showed him a picture of the driver and he verified that there was separation. I continued to listen and he disappeared.

He came back about 5 minutes later and told me he had arranged warranty replacement for my 25 year old drivers! They arrived on Saturday and I installed them

Wow!! I had really become ear dead, what a difference.

This guy really hooked me up. I never would have known about the problem and would never have thought that Definitive would replace the drivers.

In the meantime I'm really gassing for those Golden Ear Speakers. If the 3's are anywhere near as good as the 1's I will probably end up with a pair.

Definitely would buy from this guy without any question

So, kind of waiting for JohnnyB to jump in here. I think he referenced the Golden ear speakers in one of his posts which piqued my curiosity.

Yeah, I was updating myself on GoldenEar's current product lineup. It turns out that when developing their new Reference model, they learned some useful things, and the Tritons 1, 2, and 3 are now the 1+, 2+, and 3+. This review explains what they did for the "plus" versions:

Quote

While GoldenEar’s High Velocity Folded Ribbon (HVFR) tweeter, with its powerful neodymium magnet, remains unchanged in all of the Triton models, the midrange driver, crossover, and DSP software for the subwoofer section have all been substantially reworked. There are a new polypropylene cone, butyl surround, spider, and voice coil for the 4.5” Multi-Vaned Phase Plug (MVPP) midrange driver, and the balanced, linear-phase crossover, with polypropylene capacitors, is similar to the one used in the Triton One. The crossover to the powered subwoofer section has been optimized with a complete rewriting of the DSP software.

I think that's a good sign. I heard the original versions of the Triton 2 and 3 and was impressed, but the description of the "plus" versions (at the same price) sounds like some welcome refinements to me, that should result in even better clarity and better interaction with whatever room they're in. Read the review, and if you decide to buy, make sure you get the "+" version.

Great service. Like that really is because he may have lost a sale if you were happy with your repaired speaker.

I think Golden Ear are great speakers, one of the few lines that are easy to recommend to anyone. Even their on wall tiny TV speakers sound really good. I was always disappointed with Definitive Tech stuff...

My Definitive's sound great at their price point. Lately they sound even better:). the Golden ears are still a significant improvement. But I got my speakers in 1990, you have to figure there would be improvements
