Hamer Three-Way Switch Part Deux

Question

Posted

I know, I know this subject was raised recently but I have another question about Hamer 3-way switches. I have a Newport Pro and the 3-way switch does not stop in the middle position. It goes right past it, either to the bridge or neck positions. I' going to replace it and my questions are as follows:

  1. What manufacturer did Hamer use in the late '90s and early 2000s for the 3-way switches? What would be a suitable replacement if I can't find an authentic replacement part?
  2. How do you do this? Any good videos?

Thanks in advance.

1. The switch is a Rickenbacker 08834, available in a number of spots on the web.

2. Replace the switch?  If you can solder, there are four wires: 1. hot neck, 2. hot bridge, 3. ground, 4. switch output to jack.

The Rick switch looks like one of the bottom.

Very excellent information. I haven't taken it apart yet so right-angle switch in a Newport?

The Newport has the added complexity of having to fish all of the controls out through the pickup hole to work on them. As I recall, they are mounted on a rail, so everything has to come out at once.

Yikes. Haven't taken it apart yet. Trying to gather all of the intel first.

Send it back for warranty wor......

Nevermind.

There are tutorials out there on the Google that will walk you thru the whole ordeal, but if you can find a pro who'll do it for a reasonable price, do that. Personally, my patience wears thin having to pull all the guts thru an F-hole just to solder 4 wires. But if you're going to do it, now would also be the time to do any pickup swapping you might be considering.

The Newport doesn't have an access port in the bottom of the bridge pickup cavity?  This is my Gibson:

There are parts of the harness that wouldn't have fit through the F-hole.

That's an amazing bit of chicanery that you have going on there, with the strings and whatnot!

The only place I have seen that sells the correct switches is "Pick of the Ricks" in NJ. The pickups in my newport were replaced, and for some reason they also replaced the switch. I hope that they didn't replace all of the electronics. I haven't gotten the motivation a chance to pull it apart yet.

I typically when asked this question link Pick of the Ricks in my answer, but they didn't have it listed when I searched this time.  Maybe out of stock?

Nacho Music (my source for Tele Daka-ware "Top Hat" switch tips, that I've mentioned here on the board before, no affiliation with them) carries what they call '3-way Right Angle "L-Type" Toggle Switches', made by Switchcraft.  They have a few of those with different color switch tips, but IMO they all appear the same to me otherwise, just re-use your original switch-tip if you have it:

I don't think Rickenbacker actually makes switches, they probably source them from a outside manufacturer as OEM parts...they might even be Switchcraft switches FAIK, I know Gibson uses that type or similar switches in SGs, so you might be able to find them all over the 'Net.

The Hamer switches are all made by Switchcraft. The only real difference is that the nut on top of the switch has two slots cut into it to make it easier to tighten.  And, it's not just the switch tip that's longer: the actual metal portion under it is longer as well. Otherwise it is identical to the regular version:

You will note that the switch is pictured with two nuts: Hamer uses the "recessed" nut.
