How would anyone here describe the qualities of the single-coils? I really loved the 10.5kΩ Slammer in my A5! The single coils were excellent, as well. I think the problem with the single coil tones of the A5 stemmed (IMO) from the 24.75" scale length rather than 25.5." There is a certain fundamental that was missing and a certain harmonic content that was present, both unexpected after years of playing Strats. It would be really interesting to have Josh's offering in a 25.5"-scale guitar. The ProtoTele keeps swimming through my mind! Route this for the three-coil ring: Tele half bridge: Normal (reversed, of course) Telecaster control scheme (possibly a four-way switch?) : Three-coil pickup assembly: Voila! The ProtoTele! Too much fun!
JGravelin Posted October 14, 2020 Author Posted October 14, 2020 Velo, I love this idea so much! Yes: 4-way switch. And if you really want to get nuts: stacked Vol/Tone pots for total control of both pickups individually. Not only would it sound ridiculously good and have every tonal option at your disposal but the "turn heads" factor would be through the roof. The only modification needed would be to sand down the bottom of the mounting ring to around 1/4" or so and make it flat so that it sits correctly under the strings. I'll be ready anytime you are. No rush.

I'm one of those "Volume knob isn't in my way" Strat players. The Tele layout always seems backward to me. To each their own. 😊 Not recalling the shape of the A5 (or Prototype) route, I'm now pondering what I could use as a template or guide for the router. Was it a single large route or a humbucker route and a single coil route? I tend to think, with the single coil being the tabless design, it was likely a single rectangle (small swimming pool). ETA: found a few:

JGravelin Posted October 14, 2020 Author Posted October 14, 2020 TresQuire for the win! Routing templates? Oh come onnn... free-ball it! Cajones, mi amigo. 🤪

Mpcoluv Posted January 7, 2021 Posted January 7, 2021 I am doing a similar build with a single cut junior body. Wraptail, Tele control plate, but with the 6 way Strat switch. BTW I still have to route the bridge pickup cavity for the third coil. what pot values did Hamer use on the A5?
