Victor (Fret Friend) Posted January 20, 2024 Posted January 20, 2024 Hopefully, after he's sold it, he buys himself a decent camera

Ralph Posted January 21, 2024 Posted January 21, 2024 He'll be holding onto it for a while at that price.

If it was Guitar Center there would be a Max of four pictures, two of them you wouldn't be able to zoom, 1 in by 2 in on a computer screen, out of focus..🤣
Joe G Posted January 27, 2024 Author Posted January 27, 2024 The same guitar listed on Reverb @$2250 + shipping: https://reverb.com/item/72019966-1989-usa-hamer-chaparral-sustainiac-hsh-metallic-purple-sparkle-original-case
chap Posted January 28, 2024 Posted January 28, 2024 I had that same guitar but I sold it many years ago. I (used to) play a lot of Chaparrals but I really did not like the way the 1989 and newer ones played with the bolt on neck. What are your thoughts on the older glue in Chaps vs the later bolt on necks? I know that bolt on necks are easier to service and repair. Here's mine, sold the 89

Cboss Posted January 28, 2024 Posted January 28, 2024 What was the reason for the change to bolt on? Chap could you comment on the playing differences between the set neck chaparrals and the bolt ons? I have a few of the bolt ons, I have never been able to play a set neck chaparral... I love my other set neck hamers

VECTOR Posted January 28, 2024 Posted January 28, 2024 I had them both. Kept the bolt on - and I am no friend of bolt on guitars - because it is incredible sounding and playing.

Chap could you comment on the playing differences between the set neck chaparrals and the bolt ons? I have a few of the bolt ons, I have never been able to play a set neck chaparral... I love my other set neck hamers Well for starters, the angle of the neck in relation to the body of the set neck chaps seems to be angled BACK a bit. Take a look at the pic below. The bolt-on Chaps from what I can remember there was no angle there so it is kind of like a Strat. I'm not implying that the glue in neck is better but the way the neck is set BACK a bit is a lot more comfortable for me, I'm just used to it because I had the glue-in neck chaps a lot longer than the '89. However, I think if I started with the bolt-on neck, I'd probably feel that the glue-in necks are not right for me. EDIT: just want to add one thing. Unlike a Strat, when you lay these older glue-in Chaps flat on a table or floor, the headstock prevents the body of the guitar from laying flat. So guess what happens if you inadvertently step on it or drop the guitar? It snaps off the headstock. I mean, if you're performing, that happens right? You drop guitars, lay them down somewhere... so the change to a bolt-on neck with no back-angle may fix a design flaw from the previous generation.

I checked three bolt on chaps and a bolt on Centaura and they all have what looks to me to be the same angle I suspect the primary motivation for bolt on necks was to crank up production and make these more of a parts bin assembly, rather than something requiring hand fitting Can anyone comment on the playing differences?

That makes sense, eventually Hamer has to sell some volume. They can't float a company on special orders and one-offs. I think for me it's just a mental block. I (used to) play exclusively glue-in Chaps, I knew this was different so it was some kind of subconscious psych thing that prevented me from connecting with my 89 bolt-on Chap even though I'm sure it is superior in every way to my glue-in chap. I just couldn't get anything going with the '89 Have you ever kept an old car that you've had for many years felt "ahhhh... this is just so right!" when you drive it? Even though your daily driver is a new car, way better on gas, handling, braking, suspension, quieter, faster, safer etc... I'm 52 now but the black Chap I've owned since I was 19. It was my first "good" guitar, I didn't even know what Hamer was at the time. I just knew it was really cheap and had a F/R. I have a lot of history with it the black one: performed with the guitar, gone through school, careers, girlfriends with it. So when I play it, I simply play with more vigor and emo. I just couldn't connect with the '89.
Cboss Posted January 29, 2024 Posted January 29, 2024 I absolutely get that, that's a spiritual thing which I think is always right, the better breaking better gas mileage Etc that's mental which is the mind, not the spirit.. I always pay attention to the spirit, I have had a couple guitars that I could not connect with at all and they were gone fast So cool that you still have that one! With the bolt on if you want to try something put the Floyd fat brass Block in it, that really makes a difference, or at least I think it does..very cheap
scottcald Posted January 29, 2024 Posted January 29, 2024 The only thing I'll say I dislike about my set neck Chap is the sharp headstock angle. I like the almost in line of the bolt on better, but otherwise, the guitar's great, so there we go. Just have to be careful not to bang the headstock against stuff.

What do people think is a reasonable price for this one? Asking, because I have a similar one, in not as good condition, without the original case, that I am considering selling.
